Liver Abscess and ARDS in a Healthy Young Male Following Routine Dental Cleaning: An Uncommon Sequelae of Group G Streptococcal bacteremia
(ACG 2025)
- "He was started on IV piperacillin-tazobactam and underwent IR-guided abscess drainage...Post-extubation, antibiotics were narrowed to ampicillin-sulbactam...He improved with ertapenem and was discharged with outpatient follow-up. PLA in healthy individuals is rare...Early recognition and multidisciplinary care are critical to favorable outcomes as complications of PLA, such as ARDS, can occur due to systemic inflammatory response. This case adds to the limited literature on GGS-induced liver abscess in healthy individuals, highlighting the systemic implications of what may appear to be a routine outpatient procedure.Figure: CT abdomen with contrast shows a 6.1 cm * 6.2 cm * 6.4 cm right hepatic lobe fluid collection"

Cervical Necrotizing Fasciitis With Intractable Hiccups.
(PubMed, Cureus)
- "We report a case of a 61-year-old immunosuppressed man with rheumatoid arthritis on etanercept and past intravenous drug use who presented with intractable hiccups, an unreported feature of cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF)...The early surgical debridement, empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics (linezolid, ampicillin-sulbactam), and multidisciplinary teamwork were responsible for a good outcome after delayed diagnosis...This case illustrates the need for a high index of clinical suspicion and the utility of early imaging in immunocompromised patients with atypical presentations. These findings indicate a need for new diagnostic strategies to enhance the outcome of this deadly disease."

Factors Influencing Oronasal Fistula Formation After Cleft Palatoplasty: Insights from 10-Years of Surgical Outcomes
(PSTM 2025)
- "Of these, 60 received preoperative ampicillin-sulbactam, with five developing fistulas (8.33%); 17 received cefazolin with seven developing fistulas (41.18%); three received clindamycin, resulting in one fistula (33.3%). This study identifies factors contributing to fistula development at our institution. The use of preoperative cefazolin demonstrated higher fistula rates, suggesting that antibiotics with better oral flora coverage may be a factor in reducing the risk of fistula formation. This suggests the need for reevaluation of SCIP protocol antibiotic choices, which could influence plastic surgery preoperative antibiotic guidelines."

Chronic Salmonella Lymphadenitis in a Diabetic Patient
(AAO-HNSF 2025)
- "The patient received ampicillin-sulbactam, followed by piperacillin-tazobactam and linezolid, eventually ceftriaxone, and finally outpatient trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Although initially concerning for malignancy, this case of cervical lymphadenopathy with abscess formation was found to be a chronic Salmonella infection of unknown source. Management required multidisciplinary care and highlighted the vigilance required in addressing rare infections in diabetic patients."

Antimicrobial Resistance Profile of Escherichia coli Isolated from Raw Chicken Meat in a Selected Wet Market in Manila City, Philippines.
(PubMed, Acta Med Philipp)
- "High resistance rates were observed against ampicillin (92%), tetracycline (88%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (83%), chloramphenicol (79%), ampicillin-sulbactam (75%), amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (67%), fosfomycin (67%), and streptomycin (54%). The majority of the E. coli isolates were still susceptible to a wide range of selected antimicrobial agents, including carbapenems (100%), ceftriaxone (100%), cefepime (100%), cefuroxime (96%), cefotaxime (96%), ceftazidime (96%), piperacillin-tazobactam (96%), aztreonam (96%), cefoxitin (92%), and nitrofurantoin (83%), among others...This study suggests that chickens in wet markets can potentially serve as reservoir hosts for drug-resistance genes, which could transfer to other bacteria and contaminate humans, animals, and the environment within the food production and supply chain. These findings emphasize the need for AMR surveillance and strategies to combat AMR in the Philippines through the One Health approach."

Adult Hospitalized Mycoplasma Cases in a Tertiary Hospital in Japan.
(PubMed, Infect Drug Resist)
- "He was treated with sulbactam/ampicillin drip infusion and oral administration of minocycline for 2 weeks, and improved. All hospitalized adult patients with mycoplasma pneumonia were treated with antibiotics, such as minocycline and fluoroquinolone, along with corticosteroid co-administration, and all of them ultimately improved, although the chest X-ray findings varied. Antibiotics other than macrolides and corticosteroids may be an effective regimen for the treatment of severe mycoplasma pneumonia with potential macrolide resistance."

Multidisciplinary Management of Congenital Subglottic Stenosis in the Setting of Cystic Fibrosis
(AAO-HNSF 2025)
- "His postop course was complicated by increased peak inspiratory pressures on mechanical ventilation requiring frequent treatments, and tracheitis with H. influenzae and N. meningitidis treated with IV cefepime and ampicillin-sulbactam. This case emphasizes the unified airway theory and need for a broad differential of airway diagnoses in patients with CF who require repeated hospital admissions, unexplained O2 requirement, and intubation. A multidisciplinary approach is critical in the management of these complex airway patients."

Antimicrobial susceptibility profiling of caprine clinical mastitis pathogens in Punjab, India.
(PubMed, Ann Med Surg (Lond))
- "Milk samples were collected aseptically from the cases of clinical mastitis in goats followed by bacterial isolation and antibiotic susceptibility testing for amikacin, amoxicillin, amoxyclav, ampicillin, ampicillin-sulbactam, cefoperazone, cefoperazone-tazobactam, ceftizoxime, ceftriaxone, ceftriaxone-sulbactam, ceftriaxone-tazobactam, ciprofloxacin, colistin, doxycycline, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, moxifloxacin, ofloxacin, oxytetracycline, penicillin-G, streptomycin and tetracycline. As the antimicrobial susceptibility was found to vary among the goats suffering from mastitis as well as the bacteria involved, the antimicrobial susceptibility testing prior to treatment initiation would be crucial in limiting the development of resistance in goats and potentially in human beings as well. The antimicrobial susceptibility profiling in caprine mastitis revealed the multidrug resistant bacterial isolates."

Azygos Vein Thrombosis and Vertebral Osteomyelitis: A Rare Variant of Lemierre Syndrome.
(PubMed, J Infect Chemother)
- "Initial treatment with intravenous cefepime and metronidazole was administered, followed by ampicillin-sulbactam, and subsequently switched to oral clindamycin due to a drug eruption. This atypical presentation highlights the importance of thorough radiological evaluation in patients with persistent oropharyngeal symptoms and unexpected systemic manifestations, even when the classic internal jugular vein thrombosis is absent. The unique combination of thoracic vertebral osteomyelitis and azygos vein thrombosis represents an extremely rare manifestation with significant implications for diagnosis and management."
