TD-ESI-MS/MS for High-Throughput Screening of 13 Common Drugs and 4 Etomidate Analogs in Hair: Method Validation and Forensic Applications.
(PubMed, Toxics)
- "This study established a dual analytical workflow integrating thermal desorption-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (TD-ESI-MS/MS) for rapid qualitative screening and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) for confirmatory quantification of 17 psychoactive substances and metabolites across six classes (opioids, amphetamine-type stimulants, cocaine, ketamine-type drugs, cannabinoids, and etomidate analogs) in hair matrices. Despite limitations in the temporal resolution and representativeness of the cohort, this study demonstrated the viability of TD-ESI-MS/MS for bridging forensic and public health priorities. Future work should focus on optimizing the durability of the ion source for TD-ESI and validating this method across diverse populations to enhance its generalizability."

Serotonergic Compounds With Psychedelic Effects and Fluoxetine Differentially Interact With TrkB Receptors
(APA 2025)
- "We tested LSD, psilocin, N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), mescaline, 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI), N-2-methoxybenzyl-phenethylamine (25B-NBOMe), 4-bromo-2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine (2C-B), methylenedioxy amphetamine (MDA), and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine. LSD, 25B-NBOMe, and fluoxetine activated the TrkB receptor at pharmacologically relevant concentrations as partial agonists whereas psilocin, DMT, mescaline, and 2C-B did not. The combination of BDNF with fixed concentrations of the tested compounds led to reduced activation efficacy of BDNF, suggesting partial antagonism of all compounds tested. LSD potentiated the BDNF-induced TrkB activation."

Analyzing the Effects of the Stimulant Shortage on Prescription Fill Trends in the Mountain West
(APA 2025)
- "Data was stratified by year, class of stimulant (methylphenidate vs amphetamine), age 18 and under and 19 and over, and whether the prescription was filled in the same zip code as the patient's residence or a different zip code. Patients' increased filling of prescriptions in zip codes outside of their residence indicates increased travel, time, and effort. The stimulant has likely exacerbated socioeconomic and geographic disparities among patients, advantaging those of a higher socioeconomic status and those who live in urban areas with more bandwidth to seek out stimulant prescriptions further from home."

Amphetamine Induced Group I Pulmonary Hypertension: A Case Report of Unforseen Consequences
(ATS 2025)
- "This abstract is funded by: None Introduction: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a medical condition in which there is hypertension in the lungs. In patients classified as intermediate-high risk based on their REVEAL score, PAH therapy should be initiated with endothelin receptor antagonist (bosentan), phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (sildenafil), soluble guanylate cyclase stimulator (riociguat), prostanoid (epoprostenol), and/or prostacyclin agents (selexipag, and treprostinil). Treatment of PAH can be challenging as hemodynamics can be compromised with induction of these vasodilative agents; however, is necessary to prevent disease progression."

Opioid use disorder among females with breast cancer: A comprehensive analysis of prevalence in the United States and associated factors.
(ASCO 2025)
- "Moreover, substance use such as cocaine (aOR 5.252, 95% CI 4.708-5.859, p < 0.01) and amphetamine (aOR 3.948, 95% CI 3.443-4.527, p < 0.01) was also associated with higher odds, while cannabis users (aOR 0.876, 95% CI 0.793-0.968, p < 0.01) had lower odds of OUD... This study showcases the significant prevalence and impact of OUD among BC patients, identifying socioeconomic and racial disparities, and key risk factors such as NRP, psychiatric comorbidities, and concurrent substance use, like cocaine and amphetamines. Interestingly, cannabis use was associated with a lower risk of OUD, which may reflect its role as an alternative pain management strategy. Overall, this study suggests the need to adopt crucial preventative measures against OUD in patients exhibiting these characteristics."

Plasticity of ventral tegmental area disturbance during abstinence after repeated amphetamine exposure: restoration by selective activation of group II metabotropic glutamate receptors.
(PubMed, Front Pharmacol)
- "The involvement VTA afferent regions with respect to AMPH actions was analyzed either by local instillation of drugs or through inactivation by tetrodotoxin. AMPH re-exposure after abstinence turned VTA activity down, but this suppression involved alternative circuits and could no longer be rescued by mGluR activation. Thus, abstinence from repeated AMPH intake drives VTA activity from hypo-into hyperdopaminergic states, and both can be readjusted towards physiological levels via different members of group II mGluRs."

Initial exposure to addictive drugs activates polysialylated NCAM-mediated hippocampal memory-associated synaptic plasticity in the rat prior to the emergence of dependence behaviour.
(PubMed, Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry)
- "Using a rodent model, we assessed hippocampal NCAM PSA expression and synaptic remodelling in response to acute and repeated administration of heroin, cocaine, and amphetamine...These results identify hippocampal memory machinery as a key early target of addictive drugs and suggest that drug-associated memories may co-opt normal learning processes, contributing to the persistent and intrusive nature of drug cravings. The study provides novel insights into the mechanisms by which early drug experiences shape enduring behavioural vulnerability to addiction."
