Not all Herbal Extracts are Equal! Only a few have therapeutic potential
(AAD 2025)
- "Eight of 47 commercially available extracts were found to have significant anti-inflammatory effect superior to or comparable to prescription mometasone, desonide and dexamethasone. Five of these also produced significant inhibition of cutaneous pathogenic bacteria and yeast. Caution is needed in selection of extracts from the species within an herbal family due to large variation of therapeutic activity."

New Eye Drop Formulation Based on Desonide and Xanthan Gum in Dry Eye Disease: Nonclinical Studies.
(PubMed, Pharmaceutics)
- "This study aimed to evaluate its pharmacodynamic properties and to characterize its rheological behavior and mucoadhesive characteristics, compared to another formulation containing 0.2% hyaluronic acid and 0.001% hydrocortisone (HYD). The ancillary anti-inflammatory effects of a low dose of DES combined with the biophysical properties of xanthan gum are supportive of a favorable therapeutic profile, promoting the maintenance or restoration of ocular surface homeostasis while minimizing the risk of adverse effects typically associated with standard-dose corticosteroids. The comparison with another low-dose corticosteroid highlights the superiority of XanterDES in pharmacodynamic and biophysical performance."

ALLERGIC CONTACT DERMATITIS TO TOPICAL CORTICOSTEROIDS: WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP IN MANAGEMENT?
(ACAAI 2024)
- "Although initial treatment adhered to established guidelines, including topical triamcinolone acetonide, emollients, and cetirizine, eczema did not improve and worsened. Adjustments to treatment, including introduction of pimecrolimus and topical mupirocin ointment, also failed to produce any improvement...However, the patient showed improvement with the administration of oral prednisolone...Patch tests for triamcinolone acetonide, desonide, and fluocinolone acetonide were positive, showing localized inflammation and worsening of eczema at application sites...Early consideration and use of dupilumab can result in notable clinical benefits for such patients. Consent granted from patient's parents to present case."

Different variants of Lichen Planus Pigmentosus in Filipino patients: A case series
(EADV 2024)
- "He began taking Delamanid and Linezolid for multidrug- resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) clinical trial in the same month, which then led to extensive hair loss...Patients received treatment with low-dose isotretinoin, topical tacrolimus 0.1%, desonide cream, and photoprotection... The cases show a wide range of etiologies and presentations of lichen planus pigmentosus in Filipino patients. While LPP can occur without a clear cause, potential etiologic agents such as hypopigmenting agents should be considered. Pediatric cases present additional challenges due to rarity and unidentified causes."

Decyl-Glucoside; this eco-friendly but skin-unfriendly surfactant:a case report
(EADV 2024)
- "Materials & Case report A 25-year-old female patient with personal and family history of atopy had been presenting with a pruritic facial rash lasting for two months as intermitent episodes, resistant to the usual treatment of her atopic dermatitis (local corticosteroids of moderate class: desonide)... The use of decyl glucoside is becoming increasingly common with the emergence of the “ Green ” label. The cosmetics industry is rediscovering this eco-friendly alkyl glucoside, synthesized from natural, renewable sources and considered a mild surfactant, but it shouldn ’ t escape suspicion during an allergological investigation into contact dermatitis."

Oral ketoconazole induced cheilitis: A rare adverse effect
(EADV 2024)
- "It was developed as a first line agent for dermatophytosis, but was soon found to have various side effects, such as hepatotoxicity, leading to it being replaced by safer and effective drugs like terbinafine and itraconazole... Oral ketoconazole was stopped and treatment in the form of desonide 0.05% and petroleum jelly was given to be applied...Her dermatophytosis condition was managed with oral terbinafine and topical ciclopirox cream with significant improvement... Oral ketoconazole can be added to the list of causes of drug-induced cheilitis is, a hitherto unreported cause. Oral ketoconazole, though has varied other side-effects, such as hepatotoxicity and anti-androgenic side effects like gynaecomastia, cheilitis has never been reported with the use of this drug. Hence, it begins imperative to screen for cheilitis, along with other side effects, while using this drug."

Glucocorticoids rescue cell surface trafficking of R451C Neuroligin3 and enhance synapse formation.
(PubMed, Traffic)
- "A screening in HEK-293 cells overexpressing NLGN3 of 2662 compounds (FDA-approved small molecule drug library), led to the identification of several glucocorticoids such as alclometasone dipropionate, desonide, prednisolone sodium phosphate, and dexamethasone (DEX), with the ability to favor the exit of full-length R451C NLGN3 from the ER. The effect of DEX was validated on a novel model system represented by neural stem progenitor cells and differentiated neurons derived from the R451C NLGN3 knock-in mouse, expressing the endogenous protein. This work shows a potential rescue strategy for an autism-linked mutation affecting cell surface trafficking of a synaptic protein."
