A Retrospective Study on the Prevalence and Surgical Management of Umbilical Infections in Calves in West Azerbaijan, Iran.
(PubMed, Vet Med Int)
- "Omphalitis was the least frequent infection observed in the newborns and omphaloarteritis was the least common pathology of the umbilical remnants...The calves managed under range condition exhibited a higher prevalence of the infections with no breed- or gender-related differences. Surgical management was highly successful in treating the affected calves."

Infectious endophthalmitis associated with umbilical infection in Japanese black calf: a case report.
(PubMed, Front Vet Sci)
- "Based on these findings, diagnoses of omphaloarteritis, omphalourachitis, and bullous keratitis were made...Escherichia coli was isolated from the umbilical artery abscess, urachal abscess, intraabdominal pus, and aqueous humor, and all isolates exhibited identical genotypes. These findings suggest that endophthalmitis occurred as a result of the hematogenous spread of bacteria originating from septic umbilical cord remnants and that ocular ultrasonography is useful for assessing intraocular pathologies."

Hematuria in a 3-month-old filly with an internal umbilical abscess and internal iliac artery aneurysm.
(PubMed, Can Vet J)
- "This report emphasizes the value of obtaining a precise diagnosis via CT in order to avoid unviable treatment approaches when confronted with this unusual secondary complication of omphaloarteritis. Key clinical message: Umbilical complications are routinely diagnosed in equine neonatal medicine, and commonly lead to septicemia, physitis, and septic arthritis; severe internal umbilical abscessation, and subsequent vascular and urinary disorders are uncommon sequelae."

Ultrasonographic evaluation of umbilical structures in Holstein calves: A comparison between healthy calves and calves affected by umbilical disorders.
(PubMed, J Dairy Sci)
- "Also the color Doppler ultrasonography showed a significant difference in frequency and percentage of speed-flow in the early days of examination between the 3 groups, with the most reliable results detected from the umbilical arteries. In our experimental study, omphaloarteritis could be detected at the d 1 color Doppler exam, with a 100% specificity and a 100% positive predictive value."
