Machine-Learning and Gene-Synergy Networks Reveal Interpretable Drivers of Antibiotic Resistance in Staphylococcus aureus.
(PubMed, Int J Antimicrob Agents)
- "Our findings indicate that antibiotic resistance in S. aureus involves distinct genetic network architectures depending on the antibiotic, highlighting the diverse regulatory pathways bacteria employ to acquire resistance. This discovery-oriented framework prioritizes interpretable determinants and generates testable mechanistic hypotheses, with prospective standardized evaluations aimed at assessing its translatability to clinical settings."

Enhanced detection of bacterial etiologies, antibiotic resistance profile, and treatment outcomes of meningitis patients in Ethiopia: a prospective cross-sectional study.
(PubMed, BMC Microbiol)
- "PCR significantly outperformed culture in detecting bacterial pathogens. E. coli was the most common causative agent of bacterial meningitis, and we observed high rates of antibiotic resistance among Gram-negative bacteria. While most patients had favorable outcomes, low Glasgow Coma Scale scores, comorbidities, and delayed presentation to healthcare facilities were independently associated with unfavorable outcomes."

Tailoring Nanoparticle Surfaces Empowered by Multivariate Techniques for Detection of Multiple Antibiotic Fingerprints in Real Samples Using Hand-Held Colorimetric Signal Readout.
(PubMed, ACS Appl Mater Interfaces)
- "With 100% accuracy, the sensor array successfully discriminates between eight antibiotics (amoxicillin, azithromycin, neomycin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, ofloxacin, fluconazole, and ciprofloxacin), with detection limits ranging from 1.7 to 8.3 μM. Further, for the real-time applications, we have developed prototypes for colorimetric analysis and also modified the previously developed 96-well plate reader, which functions similarly to the UV-visible absorption spectrophotometer. These on-site sensing methods, with straightforward preparation, quick response, exceptional sensitivity, and consistently stable high-throughput signal output, show significant potential for practical use in food forensics and for environmental remediation."

P097 Atypical pemphigoid and an acneiform eruption in a patient with inflammatory bowel disease.
(PubMed, Br J Dermatol)
- "The differential diagnosis included fungal and bacterial infections, and his scalp responded to terbinafine and ciprofloxacin, with partial improvement of his face and trunk...He responded rapidly to high-dose oral prednisolone, which was tapered over 3 months...His working diagnosis is two concurrent conditions: an atypical pemphigoid and a separate acneiform/pustular eruption possibly on the pyoderma gangrenosum-hidradenitis suppurativa spectrum in the context of irritable bowel disease. He is now well controlled on dapsone and doxycycline, with isotretinoin added recently, given an overarching clinical feature of an acneiform eruption at present."

GD04 (P064) A study of multidrug resistance pattern in scabies-associated infections in endemic communities.
(PubMed, Br J Dermatol)
- "High resistance was noted for erythromycin (91.6%) and ciprofloxacin (53.7%). Gentamicin and clindamycin had moderate susceptibility rates of 57.4% and 51.9%, respectively. Nitrofurantoin and rifampicin maintained high susceptibility (98.1% and 92.6%). Among bacterial strains, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was most prevalent (46.3%), followed by coagulase-negative staphylococci (5.6%) and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (5.6%)...The high prevalence of MRSA highlights the urgent need for improved infection control measures and the judicious use of antibiotics. While newer drugs like tigecycline, linezolid and daptomycin offer alternative treatment options, robust surveillance and targeted antibiotic stewardship programmes are crucial to address this growing challenge and ensure effective patient care.TableBacteria isolated from 55 patients with scabiesOrganism isolatedn (%)Staphylococcus aureus47 (97)Staphylococcus haemolyticus2 (4)Staphylococcus epidermidis2..."

Prevalence, Antibiotic Resistance Pattern, and Molecular Characteristics of Staphylococcus epidermidis Isolated From Milk of Pure Breeds of Dairy Cattle With Subclinical Mastitis.
(PubMed, J Trop Med)
- "Our antibiogram results underscored a high resistance of S. epidermidis isolates, particularly against cefoxitin (56.25%) and penicillin (43.75%), while demonstrating remarkable susceptibility to amikacin (2.08%), clindamycin (0%), ciprofloxacin (0%), and chloramphenicol (0%). Further research is needed to examine geographic and farm-specific factors affecting S. epidermidis prevalence, and genetic techniques like multilocus sequence typing should be employed to study clonal spread and horizontal gene transfer. Routine antimicrobial sensitivity assessments and continuous monitoring of medication use are essential to develop sustainable strategies against antibiotic resistance in the dairy industry."

Assessment of the Antimicrobial Activity of Cistus salviifolius L. and Helichrysum stoechas (L.) DC Extracts and Their Synergistic Potential with Conventional Antibiotics Against Staphylococcus aureus.
(PubMed, Int J Mol Sci)
- "When combined with antibiotics such as ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, or vancomycin, the extracts of C. salviifolius and H. stoechas predominantly exhibited synergistic (FICI value ≤ 0.5) or additive effects (0.5 < FICI ≤ 1), with some combinations resensitizing resistant strains...The presence of compounds such as myricetin 3 O-galactoside, catechin derivatives, gallic acid, kaempferol, and chlorogenic acid in the extracts may contribute to their anti-Staphylococcus activity. These results demonstrated the dual antimicrobial and antivirulence potential of C. salviifolius and H. stoechas extracts, highlighting their promise as therapeutic agents or adjuvants against S. aureus.
