A randomized, active-controlled, multicenter, phase 3 clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of GV1001 in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
(PubMed, Prostate Int)
- "No patients underwent prostate surgery or minimally invasive procedures during the study. GV1001 exhibited corresponding efficacy and tolerability, providing evidence of amelioration in urinary symptoms among patients with BPH in comparison to the use of 5 mg finasteride."

Signal detection between 5-alpha reductase inhibitors and the risk of suicidality and depression: an international pharmacovigilance analysis.
(PubMed, Eur J Clin Pharmacol)
- "Although our study does not imply causality, this findings suggest a statistically significant disproportionality in reports of suicidality and depression associated with finasteride use and increased signal risks of suicidality and depression highlighting the need for further large-scale epidemiological studies to confirm these findings and investigate the underlying mechanisms."

Facile fabrication of cedrol nanoemulsions with deep transdermal delivery ability and high safety for effective androgenic alopecia treatment.
(PubMed, Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces)
- "Our findings demonstrate that cedrol (CD) effectively inhibits the expression of 5α-reductase 2 (5αR2), akin to the FDA-approved drug finasteride, while also surpassing it in terms of promoting cell proliferation...Moreover, CD-NEs treatment leads to a significant reduction in dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels in the skin while maintaining stasis levels in serum, underscoring its efficacy in targeting androgenetic pathways with high safety. This comprehensive analysis sheds light on the efficacy and mechanism of action of CD-NEs in hair regeneration, offering valuable insights for future clinical applications in AGA treatment."

Comparison of Finasteride and Dutasteride on Risk of Prostate Cancer in Patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: A Pooled Analysis of 15 Real-world Databases.
(PubMed, World J Mens Health)
- "Using real-world databases, the present study demonstrated that dutasteride was not associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer than finasteride in patients with BPH."

Review of Medical Therapy Options in Updated AUA Guidelines for BPH Management, Journal Club - Rashid Sayyid & Zachary Klaassen
(Urotoday)
- "...and Zach Klaassen discuss the AUA's updated guidelines for managing lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH, with a focus on medical therapy. They recommend alpha blockers for moderate to severe symptoms, noting all types have similar efficacy in improving IPSS scores. The choice of alpha blocker should be based on patient age, comorbidities, and side effects like ejaculatory dysfunction or blood pressure changes. For prostatic enlargement, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs) are advised, effectively reducing prostate size and symptoms, with both finasteride and dutasteride being equally effective."

The effect of acupuncture on oestrogen receptors in rats with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
(PubMed, J Steroid Biochem Mol Biol)
- "Dissections were performed after rats were anesthetized with isoflurane, and then the weight and volume of the prostate were then measured...There was no significant difference in ERα messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression among the groups, but the ERβ mRNA expression in the finasteride group showed a significant difference compared with the control and acupuncture groups. The mechanism of the acupuncture treatment of BPH may be related to the increased transcription level of ERβ mRNA in prostate tissues, the improved distribution of ERα expression in epithelial cells and the aggregation expression of ERs in hyperplastic nodules."

Cinnamomum cassia and Rosa laevigata Mixture Improves Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia in Rats by Regulating Androgen Receptor Signaling and Apoptosis.
(PubMed, Nutrients)
- "In addition, HT080 showed no toxicity in the liver and did not exhibit androgenic and antiandrogenic activities. Our finding revealed that HT080 can be a potential candidate for the treatment of BPH by regulating androgen receptor signaling and apoptosis."

Inhibitory effects of Centella asiatica (L.) Urban on enlarged prostate through androgen receptor and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways.
(PubMed, Food Funct)
- "Moreover, CAA suppressed the expression of the PI3K/Akt pathway and cell proliferation-related factors compared to the BPH group. Taken together, these results indicate that CAA improves the inhibitory efficacy of BPH by inhibiting the androgen receptor and PI3K/Akt pathways, suggesting that CAA may be a promising candidate for biopharmaceutical formulations of BPH."

Use of 5-ARIs May Decrease Bladder Cancer Risk
(Renal and Urology News)
- "'Among studies that sought to determine whether 5-ARIs have a role in bladder cancer prevention, some demonstrated positive correlation and some negative co-investigator Blayne Welk, MD, MSc...noted in an interview. Our study examined compliance to treatment and is an important milestone in this field. Further research is needed to better understand the findings.'"

Transcutaneous application of ultrasound enhances the effects of finasteride in a murine model of androgenic alopecia.
(PubMed, Ultrasonography)
- "The findings of the present study suggest that pulsed application of ultrasound promotes hair growth, potentially by disrupting the binding of albumin to finasteride. This may suggest further applications to enhance the pharmacological effects of other relevant drugs exhibiting high plasma protein binding."

Heat-killed and live Enterococcus faecalis Attenuates Enlarged Prostate in an Animal Model of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
(PubMed, J Microbiol Biotechnol)
- "faecalis exhibited inhibitory effect on benign prostatic hyperplasia, and even heat-killed E. faecalis showed similar efficacy to the live cells in the BPH rat model. This is the first investigation for the effect of heat-killed and live E. faecalis on BPH, suggests that heat-killed E. faecalis might be a candidate for the food additives in various foods regardless of heat processing."

Floppy iris syndrome: Don't miss this risk in female cataract surgery patients
(Medscape)
- "We now recognize that various other alpha-1 adrenergic antagonists (eg, doxazosin, alfuzosin, terazosin, silodosin) can have similar clinical effects, although to a lesser degree than tamsulosin....The fact that the women with IFIS in this study did not report any use of alpha-1 adrenergic antagonists, but intraoperatively exhibited IFIS with a high rate of posterior capsular rupture, leads me to believe that we are missing other etiologic factors for the development of this syndrome-a topic that would certainly benefit from further study."
