- "Intriguingly, we found that W1122 effectively inhibited retinal angiogenesis in the OIR model, and combination treatment with anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) yielded enhanced antiangiogenic effects. Collectively, our findings disclose a link between SNX3 and RIP1/3 signaling and implicate SNX3 in the development of ischemic retinopathy."

- "Electron transfer (ET) between neutral and cationic tryptophan residues in the azurin construct [Re(H126)(CO)(dmp)](W124)(W122)Cu (dmp = 4,7-Me-1,10-phenanthroline) was investigated by Born-Oppenheimer quantum-mechanics/molecular mechanics/molecular dynamics (QM/MM/MD) simulations...ET probability depends on the orientation of Re(CO)(dmp) relative to W124 and its rotation diminishes the hopping yield. Comparison with hole hopping in natural systems reveals structural and dynamics factors that are important for designing efficient hole-hopping processes."

- "During hopped wort fermentation, four S. cerevisiae strains and the S. cerevisiae × S. uvarum hybrid WY213 exceeded non-Saccharomyces strains in fermentative rate and ethanol production except for P. membranifaciens WY122...Among the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by S. cerevisiae and the S. cerevisiae × S. uvarum hybrid, phenylethyl alcohol, which has a fruit-like aroma, was the most prevalent. In conclusion, the strains characterized here have relevant brewing properties and are exploitable as indigenous craft beer starters."

- "Moreover, NSC‑631570 suppressed the growth of all tested HNSCC cell lines, including a paclitaxel‑resistant and P‑glycoprotein (MDR1)‑overexpressing cell line. In addition, NSC‑631570 showed a high anti‑angiogenic action on the tube formation ability of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). In conclusion, this study highlights NSC‑631570 as a promising therapeutic approach for HNSCC."

- "Comparing relaxation and decay kinetics of Re(dmp)124K122CuII and Re(dmp)124W122CuII suggests that ET and relaxation motions in the W122 mutant are coupled. It follows that nanosecond and faster photoinduced ET steps in azurins (and, likely other redox proteins) occur from unrelaxed systems; importantly, these reactions can be driven (or hindered) by structural and solvational dynamics."

This suggests a possible pathophysiological role of heavy metals and trace elements in the genesis of symptoms of autism spectrum disorders."

Two Tryptophans Are Better Than One in Accelerating Electron Flow through a Protein.

- "We have constructed and structurally characterized a Pseudomonas aeruginosa azurin mutant Re126WWCu , where two adjacent tryptophan residues (W124 and W122, indole separation 3.6-4.1 Å) are inserted between the Cu center and a Re photosensitizer coordinated to the imidazole of H126 (Re(H126)(CO)(4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)).- ..QM/MM/MD simulations of Re126WWCu indicate that indole solvation changes through the hopping process and W124 → *Re electron transfer is accompanied by water fluctuations that tighten W124 solvation. Our finding that multistep tunneling (hopping) confers a ∼9000-fold advantage over single-step tunneling in the double-tryptophan protein supports the proposal that hole-hopping through tryptophan/tyrosine chains protects enzymes from oxidative damage."
