Development and validation of a bacterial gastrointestinal multiplex RT-PCR assay for use on a fully automated molecular system.
(PubMed, J Microbiol Methods)
- "The respective primers and probes were designed to cover conserved genomic regions of the pathogens and validated using Ultramer oligonucleotides, positive stool material and reference strains...The assay showed excellent agreement with culture methods (>95%) and a 100% sensitivity and specificity after resolution of discrepant results. The multiplex-PCR assay provides a comprehensive, rapid and sensitive alternative to conventional methods for the detection of the major bacterial stool pathogens in diagnostic laboratories."

[VIRTUAL] Use of epidural tramadol in moderate to severe pain
(ASHP 2020)
- "Epidural tramadol can provide adequate pain relief for moderate to severe pain. Multiple reports showed that epidural tramadol can provide prolonged postoperative analgesia, without early or delayed clinical respiratory depression. Some studies suggest that caudal epidural tramadol is more efficacious and provides longer lasting analgesia postoperatively in comparison to intravenous tramadol."

Preoperative Use of Higher-Strength Opioids has a Dose-Dependent Association with Reoperations after Lumbar Decompression and Interbody Fusion Surgery.
(PubMed, Spine (Phila Pa 1976))
- "Preoperative use of the higher-potency opioid medications is associated with increased reoperations after LDD and PLIF/TLIF in a dose-dependent manner. Surgeons should use this data for preoperative opioid cessation counseling and individualized risk stratification."

New directions in the treatment of opioid withdrawal.
(PubMed, Lancet)
- "Newer agents likewise exploit these pharmacological mechanisms, including tramadol (μ-opioid receptor agonism) and tizanidine (α2 agonism). Areas for future research include managing withdrawal in the context of stabilising patients with opioid use disorder to extended-release naltrexone, transitioning patients with opioid use disorder from methadone to buprenorphine, and tapering opioids in patients with chronic, non-cancer pain."

Differences in patient-reported and observer-rated opioid withdrawal symptom etiology, time course, and relationship to clinical outcome.
(PubMed, Drug Alcohol Depend)
- "Patient-reported (Subjective Opiate Withdrawal Scale, SOWS) and observer ratings (Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale, COWS) of opioid withdrawal collected as part of a randomized controlled residential clonidine, tramadol-extended release, and buprenorphine/naloxone 7-day taper for opioid withdrawal management were analyzed...Data suggest the patient-reported SOWS demonstrated a higher level of symptom endorsement, earlier detection of symptom onset, and better association with taper completion relative to the observer rated COWS. These data provide insight into the etiology of opioid withdrawal symptom expression and time course that can be used to inform treatment intervention timing and provide a baseline for other withdrawal evaluations."

The effect of alcohol on ionizing and non-ionizing drug release from hydrophilic, lipophilic and dual matrix tablets.
(PubMed, Saudi Pharm J)
- "This study is focused on comparison of the dissolution behavior of matrix tablets (based on hypromellose and/or glyceryl behenate as retarding agent) of the same composition containing different type of drug - ionizing tramadol hydrochloride (TH) and non-ionizing pentoxifylline (PTX)...It was found that the alcohol resistence of the hydrophilic-lipophilic formulations with TH and the hydrophilic-lipophilic formulations with PTX containing a higher amount of hypromellose does not reflect the alcohol resistence of the formulations with pure hypromellose or glyceryl behenate. Both hydrophilic-lipophilic formulation with TH and more lipophilic formulation with PTX show significant alcohol dose dumping effect."

(PubMed, Drugs Aging)
- P1; "This exploratory analysis suggests that age-related differences exist in the distribution and elimination of (+)-ODM, including a 76% larger distribution outside the central compartment and 16% slower clearance of (+)-ODM. These pharmacokinetic changes are associated with a 15% higher maximum possible treatment-related effect and carry the potential for greater efficacy but also the potential for increased side effects at the same dose in elderly subjects. Assessment of Tapentadol API Abuse Liability with the Researched Abuse, Diversion and Addiction-Related Surveillance (RADARS) System.
(PubMed, J Pain)
- "Tapentadol (API) was compared with tramadol, hydrocodone, morphine, oxycodone, hydromorphone, and oxymorphone across Poison Center, Drug Diversion, and Treatment Center Programs Combined data streams from the Researched Abuse, Diversion and Addiction-Related Surveillance system...However, when adjusted for drug availability, event rates of abuse were lower than most CII opioids studied, but were not the lowest. Disentangling these two sets of findings further by examining various opioid formulations, such as extended-release and the role of abuse-deterrent formulations, is warranted."

Tramadol may be associated with increased mortality in osteoarthritis
(RheumNow)
- "JAMA reports that tramadol use in adults with osteoarthritis (OA) may be associated with increased all-cause mortality (compared with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)....While the use of tramadol in OA was associated with a higher mortality rate (compared to NSAIDs). these findings may be susceptible to confounding by indication, and further research is needed."
