[VIRTUAL] Characteristics and Predictors of Hydrocodone Misuse: Results from the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
(EUSEM 2020)
- "According to the Monitoring the Future survey, prevalence of the past year Vicodin misuse were 0.9% and 1.1% for 8th and 10th graders respectively... The results indicate a high prevalence of hydrocodone misuse within a nationally representative sample of survey respondents. The use and misuse of substances and underlying mental health conditions were important predictors of hydrocodone misuse. Appropriately directed harm reduction strategies must be developed focusing on these predictors"

Stigmatization of opioid addiction based on prescription, sex and age.
(PubMed, Addict Behav)
- "To assess which opioid users are stigmatized most, we administered an experimenter-created vignette that experimentally manipulated the type of opioid (Prescribed Vicodin vs. Non-prescribed Vicodin vs. heroin) as well as the sex of the opioid user (Male vs. Female) and the age of the user (23 years-old vs. 53 years-old) to 4300 people on Amazon's Mechanical Turk (a survey hosting website)...Lastly, young male opioid users were stigmatized more than any other group. Hydrocodone/acetaminophen not superior to codeine/acetaminophen for acute pain
(Medscape)
- P=NA, N=181; "...the pain score before the most recent dose of pain medication was the same for both groups: 7.6. A high pain score was expected as that would prompt patients to take the prescribed pain medication. Adolescent Nonmedical Use of Opioids and Alcohol Mixed with Energy Drinks.
(PubMed, Am J Health Behav)

Conclusion Our results highlight the need to improve understanding of the relationship between nonmedical prescription opioid, energy drink and AmED use. The deadliest drugs in Florida are still opioids, despite a rosy interim report from the state
- "'We're seeing the tail of what got started many years ago. There was a massive liberalization of opioid prescribing that had its inception probably in the late '80s, really started to gain momentum in the mid-'90s and went on into the early 2000s. Probably around 2011 you began to see a much bigger public awareness regarding the number of deaths,' Rosenquist says. 'People in 2004 weren't talking about it, but in 2011 they were'...Rosenquist says, just so they wouldn't have to contact the doctor for a refill. An Innovative Solution to Detect, Classify, and Report Illicit Online Marketing and Sales of Controlled Substances via Twitter: Project Finalist at HHS Opioid Code-a-Thon.
(PubMed, J Med Internet Res)
- "Results of this study confirm prior studies that have identified social media platforms, including Twitter, as a potential conduit for supply and sale of illicit opioids. To translate these results into action, authors also developed a prototype wireframe for the purposes of detecting, classifying, and reporting illicit online pharmacy tweets selling controlled substances illegally to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. Further development of solutions based on these methods has the potential to proactively alert regulators and law enforcement agencies of illegal opioid sales, while also making the online environment safer for the public."
