Geometric morphometrics analysis of forensically important Sarcophaga species.
(PubMed, Forensic Sci Res)
- "We collected a total of 80 wings (both left and right) from male individuals representing nine species (Sarcophaga africa, Sarcophaga argyrostoma, Sarcophaga hirticrus, Sarcophaga jacobsoni, Sarcophaga lehmanni, Sarcophaga melanura, Sarcophaga pandellei, Sarcophaga portschinskyi, and Sarcophaga teretirostris)...The results demonstrated effective differentiation among seven species, representing significant progress in the expedited identification of Sarcophaga species. Due to its speed, affordability, and user-friendly nature, the wing landmark-based geometric morphometrics, when combined with taxonomy, can enhance the robustness of Sarcophagidae analyses and prove to be useful for discriminating flesh flies in forensic contexts."

Heroic actions of dermatologists during the Holocaust
(EADV 2024)
- "A recent study identified five non- Jewish dermatologists – Emanuele Stablum (Italy) , Erzsebet Heintz (Hungary) , Lubbertus Leopold (Holland) , Pandelis Kallinikides (Greece) and Antun Vuletic (Croatia) – who have been awarded the title “ Righteous Among the Nations ” for saving Jews in the Holocaust... Just as we acknowledge eminent dermatologists for research and clinical contributions, it is important to sometimes recognise dermatologists for other reasons. The courage and heroic actions of the five dermatologists warrant recognition, and occupy a special strand of the history of our field.**"

Salt-tolerance mechanisms in quinoa: Is glycinebetaine the missing piece of the puzzle?
(PubMed, Plant Physiol Biochem)
- "We show that the differential distribution of sodium in plants depends on the variety, observing that varieties such as Pandela Rosada limit the passage transit of sodium to the aerial part of the plant, a mechanism that seems to be regulated by sodium transporters such as HKT1s or SOS1...The compound with a higher presence was glycinebetaine, which makes up 6% of the leaf dry matter under saline conditions. Our findings suggest that glycinebetaine can act as an osmolyte and/or osmoprotectant, facilitating plant development under high saline ambient."

Discovery of novel inhibitor of 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 using in silico structure-based screening approach for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
(PubMed, J Diabetes Metab Disord)
- "The binding energies of hydrocortisone succinate, medroxyprogesterone acetate, testolactone, hydrocortisone cypionate, deoxycorticosterone acetate, and hydrocortisone probutate were lower than that of substrate corticosterone...The docking study revealed that hydrocortisone cypionate has a higher binding affinity than carbenoxolone and its other analogs...These findings indicate the potential use of this FDA approved drug in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. However, validation by in vitro inhibitory studies and clinical trials on type 2 diabetes patients is essential to confirm the current findings."

(Het.) filia Rondani, 1860; S. (Het.) haemorrhoides Böttcher, 1913; S. (Het.) pumila Meigen, 1826; S. (Het.) vagans Meigen, 1826; S. (Lis.) dux Thomson, 1869; S. (Lis.) tuberosa Pandellé, 1896; S. (Meh.) sexpunctata (Fabricius, 1805); S. (Pan.) protuberans Pandellé, 1896; S. (Sar.) carnaria (Linnaeus, 1758); S. (Sar.) variegata (Scopoli, 1763), and S. (Pse.) spinosa Villeneuve, 1912...Combined with previous records, 42 species of flesh flies have been recorded from Croatian Baranja, which comprise 27% of the flesh flies known to occur in Croatia. The total number of species of the family Sarcophagidae currently known in Croatia has increased to 156."

Cuticular hydrocarbons for identifying Sarcophagidae (Diptera).
(PubMed, Sci Rep)
- "Here, we analysed the CHC chemical profiles of adult males and females of eleven species of flesh flies belonging to the genus Sarcophaga Meigen (Sarcophagidae), namely Sarcophaga africa (Wiedemann), S. agnata Rondani, S. argyrostoma Robineau-Desvoidy, S. carnaria (Linnaeus), S. crassipalpis Macquart, S. melanura Meigen, S. pumila Meigen, S. teretirostris Pandellé, S. subvicina Rohdendorf, S. vagans Meigen and S. variegata (Scopoli)...Time of preservation prior to extraction ranged between a few weeks to over one hundred years. CHC profiles (1) allowed reliable identification of a large majority of specimens, (2) differed between males and females of the same species, (3) reliably associated males and females of the same species, provided sufficient replicates (up to 10) of each sex were analysed, and (4) identified specimens preserved for up to over one hundred years prior to extraction."

Comparative analysis of mitochondrial genomes among the subfamily Sarcophaginae (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) and phylogenetic implications.

- "Moreover, the molecular phylogenetic relationships among the subgenera Helicophagella, Kozlovea, Kramerea, Pandelleisca, Phallocheira, Pseudothyrsocnema, Sinonipponia and Seniorwhitea were rarely put forward prior to this study. This study provides insight into the population genetics, molecular biology, and phylogeny for the subfamily Sarcophaginae, especially for the subgeneric classification of Sarcophaga. However, compared with the enormous species diversity of flesh flies, the available mitogenomes are still limited for recovering the phylogeny of Sarcophaginae."
