Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine: Bidirectional Effects on Breathing in Rats.
(PubMed, bioRxiv)
- "Morphine and 7-HMG induced significant respiratory depression, evidenced by reductions in breathing frequency, tidal volume, and minute volume...Conversely, mitragynine, kratom's most abundant alkaloid, unexpectedly increased respiratory frequency unaffected by naloxone. These findings highlight critical pharmacological differences between kratom-related alkaloids, emphasizing potential risks associated with products containing high concentrations of 7-HMG."

Effectiveness and analgesic effect of local infiltration analgesia and femoral nerve block after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
(PubMed, BMC Musculoskelet Disord)
- "The FNB is superior to LIA for intraoperative control of postoperative pain in the first 8 to 12 h after ACLR. But there was no significant difference in pain control at other time points, morphine consumption, and analgesic duration between the two groups within 24 h after surgery. The LIA group had a higher incidence of nausea within 24 h after surgery."

The Effects of Pre-Adolescent Morphine Exposure on Puberty Onset and Body Weight
(ENDO 2025)
- "Future studies should repeat the study during earlier age points as well as later ages (i.e. during puberty) to better understand how morphine interacts with the reproductive axis. Morphine exposure during this prepubertal time period may still have lasting effects on adult fertility and reproduction, despite having no effects on pubertal timing, and future studies are needed to determine the long-term consequences of adolescent morphine exposure."

Definitive urine drug testing in emergency medicine: Recreational and psychiatric drug findings.
(PubMed, J Mass Spectrom Adv Clin Lab)
- "Definitive testing resulted in 1,350 drug findings with prevalent use of nicotine (63%), cocaine (34%), ∆9 tetrahydrocannabinol (34%), fentanyl (17%), morphine or heroin (11%) and methamphetamine (6%)...Immunoassay performance showed high false negative rates for benzodiazepines (40%), amphetamines (38%), barbiturates (33%), opiates (25%), methadone (20%) and cocaine (16%), along with inaccuracy in phencyclidine detection...This study also shows the limitations of immunoassay drug testing in both scope and sensitivity, with a high rate of undetected drug use. The study provides evidence-based support for recommended implementation of definitive drug testing in emergency medicine as a guide to clinical management in drug-related ED visits."

Combination of Cannabidiol and Low-Dose Buprenorphine Suggests Synergistic Analgesia and Attenuates Buprenorphine-Induced Respiratory Depression.
(PubMed, Cannabis Cannabinoid Res)
- " Data obtained in the present study indicate the addition of CBD to BUP was opioid-sparing and attenuated BUP- but not morphine-induced respiratory depression. There was no evidence these findings were the result of a PK interaction. Results support the hypothesis that BDH-001, a fixed-dose combination of BUP and CBD, may provide effective analgesia with a more favorable safety profile."

Early post-operative opioid fills after cancer-directed surgery among Medicare beneficiaries by race and ethnicity.
(ASCO 2025)
- "Among Medicare beneficiaries undergoing cancer-directed surgeries in 2012-2021, two-thirds of surgical episodes were associated with an opioid fill. In contrast to prior studies of opioid fills among cancer patients, we observed the highest opioid fills among Black patients. Future work is needed to understand the association of time and patient, physician, and healthcare factors on post-operative opioid prescribing and to understand the association of opioid prescribing with pain control."

Temporal trends in opioid prescription fills following cancer-directed surgery.
(ASCO 2025)
- "Among episodes with ≥1 opioid fill, the median dose of the first opioid fill declined from 225 (IQR:150,300) morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs) to 100 (IQR:75,150) MMEs between 2012-2021, and the total dose of all fills in 30d fell from 250 (IQR:150,450) MMEs to 112.5 (IQR:75,210) MMEs... Medicare beneficiaries undergoing cancer-directed surgeries have experienced steep declines in prescription opioid medication fills in the postoperative period. Future work is needed to understand potential impacts of declining postoperative opioid prescribing on outcomes such as uncontrolled pain, pain-related emergency department visits, persistent opioid use, and development of opioid use disorders. Support: R01CA279414."

Effects of maternal morphine consumption on odontogenesis in rats: A histomorphometric study.
(PubMed, J Dent Res Dent Clin Dent Prospects)
- "Two or three rats were separated from each mother and anesthetized using ketamine at 2 mg/kg. Lastly, the enamel and dentin were significantly thicker in the control group than in the experimental group in the 1-, 4-, 7-, and 10-day-old infant groups (P=0.001). These results suggest that morphine sulfate interfered with the development of the tooth bud and reduced the secretion of enamel and dentin matrix."

ARE RHEUMATOLOGISTS CONTRIBUTING TO THE OPIOID CRISIS
(EULAR 2025)
- "Those who were prescribed strong opioids such as morphine, fentanyl, oxycodone, buprenorphine and hydromorphone were included...Other treatments were associated to control pain in 52.56% of the cases (zoledronic acid, Glucocorticoids, NSAIDS)... Through this study, strong opioid prescription among Rheumatologists seems reasonable aiming to control pain of severe tumoral or infectious diseases with short-term use and low dosages. Awareness srategies should target all health professionals involved to reverse the current epidemic."

(EULAR 2025)
- "Finally, as third-line therapy, codeine-paracetamol combination was the most prescribed (60%), followed by tramadol-paracetamol (20%) and morphine (20%). Our study showed the high level of misusage of opioids among patients with RD. Factors associated with high use are the frequency of prescription over the last year, duration of prescription and diabetes. Early identification of misuse risk factors and prioritizing alternatives are crucial."

Comparative Risk of Delirium Among Opioid Users for Non-Cancer Pain: A Large-Scale Retrospective Cohort Study
(EULAR 2025)
- "Oxycodone, fentanyl, buprenorphine and morphine were associated with a significantly higher risk of delirium compared to codeine, whilst tramadol showed no significant increase in risk. One of the strengths of this study is the use of daily longitudinal clinical assessment records in EHRs to identify in-hospital delirium events. Given the limited pain-relief options available, these results allow better personalisation of pain management strategies in patients where delirium may be of concern and would help minimise these adverse outcomes in hospitalised patients."

Machine learning models for predicting opioid-related hospitalisation in new opioid users with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases
(EULAR 2025)
- "Key risk factors identified in the CPH model included very high initial morphine milligram equivalents (≥200 MME/day; hazard ratio [HR]: 5.26, 95% CI: 5.03–5.49), high initial MME/day (120–199 MME/day; HR: 4.54, 95% CI: 4.23–4.88), high Charlson Comorbidity Index scores (HR: 2.31, 95% CI: 2.21–2.42), a history of suicide attempts or self-harm (HR: 2.07, 95% CI: 1.95–2.19), and alcohol dependence (HR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.67–1.87)... High MME/day at initiation, multimorbidity, and histories of self-harm and alcohol dependence were found to be top factors associated with opioid-related hospitalisation. Greater vigilance where these factors exist could guide targeted interventions to reduce opioid-related hospitalisations. In this study both machine-learning and CPH models demonstrated good predictive performance."
