CLINICAL AND EPIDEMIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ACTINIC PRURIGO OVER A 15-YEAR SPAN IN A MEXICAN TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL CENTER
(AAD 2026)
- "Topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors are recommended for mild cases, while thalidomide remains the most effective therapy for refractory cases. Additional systemic therapies include oral corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, phototherapy, biologics, antimalarials and Polypodium leucotomos extract...Mucosal involvement (lip or ocular) occurs in about one-third. Diagnosis is often delayed and biopsy confirmation is rarely required."

Evaluation of Oral combination of Aspalathus linearis extracts and Polypodium leucotomos extract in preserving Vitamin D Receptor expression and preventing UVA-Induced Skin damage.
(AAD 2026)
- "To date, the impact of oxidative stress on reducing VDR-levels has been demonstrated ex-vivo, while this study would demonstrate its relationship in-vivo. The new combination may represent an innovative complement to topical sunscreens by preserving the VDR and improving systemic photoprotection. This study provides new insights into the systemic photoprotective potential of the combination of AL-PLE."

In vitro Effect of a Combination of Aspalathus linearis and Polypodium leucotomos Extracts in Preventing Cellular Damage and Hyperpigmentation Induced by Blue Light
(AAD 2026)
- "There is a growing interest in understanding blue light-triggered skin damage and hyperpigmentation, which prevention is of key importance in special populations (dark skin phototypes, individuals with melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Thus, this research increases the understanding of the intracellular mechanisms mediating the preventive action of a natural antioxidant compound, opening doors to its use in photoprotective strategies to address important dermatological concerns"

Adjunctive use of Polypodium leucotomos extract in patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria: An exploratory study.
(PubMed, Photochem Photobiol)
- "Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) and X-linked protoporphyria (XLP) cause severe photosensitivity, resulting in significant quality of life (QoL) impairment. Adjunctive PLE improved short-term QoL in participants with incomplete symptom control on afamelanotide alone and was well tolerated. Larger studies are warranted."

The effect of Fernblock® in preventing blue-light-induced oxidative stress and cellular damage in retinal pigment epithelial cells is associated with NRF2 induction.
(PubMed, Photochem Photobiol Sci)
- "In this context, we explored the potential protective properties of the vegetal extract from Polypodium leucotomos, Fernblock® (FB), using the widely known treatment with lutein as a reference for comparison...Notably, the nuclear translocation of NRF2 induced by blue light was similar to that observed in cells pre-treated with FB, while lutein pre-treatment resulted in nuclear NRF2 levels similar to control cells, suggesting key differences in the mechanism of cellular protection exerted by these compounds. These results may represent the foundation ground for the use of FB as a new ingredient in the development of alternative prophylactic strategies for blue-light-associated diseases, a currently rising medical interest."

Protective effect of an extract of Polypodium leucotomos against oxidative stress and melanogenesis induced by ultraviolet A radiation and air pollutants
(EADV 2023)
