Intrinsic and TDP-43 dysfunction-driven cellular degradation loads evoke Tfe3a- assoicated neuroprotective autophagy in large spinal motor neurons

We identified motor neurons as the cell type that exhibits the highest autophagic flux in the spinal cord. Basal autophagic flux was enhanced more in ALS-susceptible larger SMNs than in ALS-resistant smaller SMNs and brainstem ocular motor neurons. The enhanced autophagic flux was neuro-protective, as its perturbation led to impaired motor axon outgrowth and was further amplified by knock-out (KO) of the ALS-related protein TDP-43."
