Impact of local anesthesia on ciliary dyskinesia diagnosis by digital high-speed videomicroscopy.
(PubMed, Pediatr Pulmonol)
- "Local anesthesia with lidocaine and naphazoline spray did not affect ciliary function outcomes. These findings support the safe use of these agents in clinical practice for PCD diagnostic procedures. Further research with larger cohorts is warranted for validation."

Two Small Molecule Drugs with Topical Applications, Diflunisal and Naphazoline, and Their Potentially Toxic Photodegradants: Analysis by Chemical and Biological Methods.
(PubMed, Molecules)
- "In addition, two in vitro tests on BALB/c 3T3 mouse fibroblasts showed a phototoxic effect of DIF and NAF at the lowest concentrations tested, i.e., 5 µg/mL. Thus, our present results could be useful to design further phototoxicity studies for DIF and NAF to minimize the risk of phototoxicity due to their photodegradation."

Naphazoline abuse: a rare case of myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries.
(PubMed, J Cardiovasc Med (Hagerstown))
- "We describe the case of a previously healthy man who experienced a MINOCA (myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries) after abuse of recommended dose of naphazoline. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a strict temporal relation between the occurrence of MINOCA and topical naphazoline abuse is being described."

Rapid determination of 87 prohibited ingredients in cosmetics by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry
(PubMed, Se Pu)
- "The positive components included trimethoprim, terbinafine, naphazoline, 7-methoxycoumarin, and 7-methylcoumarin. The established method displays the advantages of simple operation and rapidness and a high sensitivity and good recovery. And, this method provides technical support for rapid risk screening and the revision of national standards for cosmetics."

Application of multivariate chemometrics tools for spectrophotometric determination of naphazoline HCl, pheniramine maleate and three official impurities in their eye drops.
(PubMed, Sci Rep)
- "The proposed models could determine NZ and PN with respective detection limits of 0.447 and 1.750 μg mL for PLS, and 0.494 and 2.093 μg mL for ANN. The two established models were compared favorably with official methods where no significant difference observed."

Rapid Resolution Of Botulinum Toxin-Induced Upper Eyelid Ptosis After Treatment With A Combination Of Anticholinesterase And Alpha-2-Adrenergic Agonist
(WCD 2023)
- "The eyelid immediately began to rise after administering 60 mg of oral pyridostigmine (anticholinesterase) and naphazoline HCl 0.012% eye drops (alpha-2-adrenergic agonist), achieving symmetrical eye anthropometrical measurement without feeling heaviness or fatigue in two hours...Treatments were discontinued, and there was no recurrence after another one-month evaluation while retaining the botulinum toxin cosmetic outcome. KEY MESSAGE: The combination of anticholinesterase and alpha-2-adrenergic agonists might provide a rapid resolution of botulinum toxin-induced ptosis with the consideration of any possible side effects"

Effects of thiram exposure on liver metabolism of chickens.
(PubMed, Front Vet Sci)
- "Metabolomics analysis shows that 62 metabolites were down-regulated (ginsenoside F5, arbekacin, coproporphyrinogen III, 3-keto Fusidic acid, marmesin, isofumonisin B1, 3-Hydroxyquinine, melleolide B, naphazoline, marmesin, dibenzyl ether, etc.) and 35 metabolites were up-regulated (tetrabromodiphenyl ethers, deoxycholic acid glycine conjugate, L-Palmitoylcarnitine, austalide K, hericene B, pentadecanoylcarnitine, glyceryl palmitostearate, quinestrol, 7-Ketocholesterol, tetrabromodiphenyl ethers, etc.) in thiram-induced chickens, mainly involved in the metabolic pathways including glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchor biosynthesis, porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, primary bile acid biosynthesis and steroid hormone biosynthesis. Taken together, this research showed that thiram exposure significantly altered hepatic metabolism in chickens. Moreover, this study also provided a basis for regulating the use and disposal of thiram to..."

Naphazoline and oxymetazoline are superior to epinephrine in enhancing the cutaneous analgesia of lidocaine in rats.
(PubMed, Fundam Clin Pharmacol)
- "We observed that 4 adrenergic agonists and epinephrine induce analgesia by themselves, and such an effect has a longer duration than local anesthetics. Co-administration of lidocaine with the adrenergic agonist enhances the analgesic effect, and the cutaneous analgesic effect of lidocaine plus naphazoline (or oxymetazoline) is greater than that of lidocaine plus epinephrine."

The signaling and selectivity of α-adrenoceptor agonists for the human α2A, α2B and α2C-adrenoceptors and comparison with human α1 and β-adrenoceptors.
(PubMed, Pharmacol Res Perspect)
- "Ligands with high intrinsic efficacy (e.g., brimonidine and moxonidine at α2A) stimulated biphasic (Gi-Gs) concentration responses, however for ligands with low intrinsic efficacy (e.g., naphazoline), responses were monophasic (Gi-only)...Comparison with α1 and β1/β2-adrenoceptors demonstrated subclass affinity selectivity for some compounds (e.g., α2:dexmedetomidine, α1:A61603) whilst e.g., oxymetazoline had high affinity for both α2A and α1A-subtypes, compared to all others. Some compounds had subclass selectivity due to selective intrinsic efficacy (e.g., α2:brimonidine, α1:methoxamine/etilefrine). A detailed knowledge of these agonist characteristics is vital for improving computer-based deep-learning and drug design."

Pharmacological Properties and Function of the PxOctβ3 Octopamine Receptor in Plutella xylostella (L.).
(PubMed, Insects)
- "Furthermore, the agonists naphazoline, clonidine, 2-phenethylamine, and amitraz activated the PxOctβ3 receptor, and naphazoline was the most effective. Only metoclopramide and mianserin had significant antagonistic effects on PxOctβ3, whereas yohimbine, phentolamine, and chlorpromazine lacked obvious antagonistic effects. The injection of double-stranded RNA in an RNA interference assay indicated that PxOctβ3 regulates development in P. xylostella. This study demonstrated the pharmacological properties and functions of PxOctβ3 in P. xylostella, thus, providing a theoretical basis for the design of pesticides that target octopamine receptors."

Patient-Reported Symptoms Associated with Over-the-Counter Allergy Eye Drops
(ASCRS-ASOA 2022)
- "The Purpose of this work was to evaluate a patient’s perceived ocular comfort after application of topical 0.7% olopatadine compared to 0.035% ketotifen fumarate or 0.3% pheniramine maleate/0.025% naphazoline hydrochloride. Both studies found that participants were numerically more likely to report that they strongly preferred or preferred 0.7% olopatadine over the comparison drops for all Likert symptoms evaluated except for vision fluctuation/blur, which was similar between 0.7% olopatadine and 0.3% pheniramine maleate. Conclusion Topical 0.7% olopatadine appears to be more comfortable and result in less ocular symptoms than 0.035% ketotifen fumarate or 0.3% pheniramine maleate, which suggests that patients may be more likely to comply with topical 0.7% olopatadine than its common market competitors."
