A Sharp Mind, a Failing Heart: Cardiomyopathy From Chronic Adderall Use
(SCCM 2026)
- "Introduction: Stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin are widely prescribed for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In this patient, severe global hypokinesis and reduced EF were disproportionate to an isolated LAD lesion and, in the absence of other causes, supported a diagnosis of Adderall-induced cardiomyopathy. Clinicians should maintain high suspicion in patients with unexplained LV dysfunction and a history of chronic stimulant use."

Spontaneous Proximal Middle Cerebral Artery Dissection due to Stimulant-associated Vascular Injury
(AAN 2026)
- "Given the severity of her deficits, she received IV Tenecteplase and was transferred for thrombectomy...She was treated with IV eptifibatide and transitioned to aspirin 81 mg daily...Given her use of bupropion and Adderall, stimulant-associated vascular injury was considered... Intracranial arterial dissection (IAD) is a rare cause of stroke in the young that frequently requires angiography for diagnosis. Management remains unstandardized and necessitates broad differential consideration for underlying etiology. In our unique case, a potential cause may have been stimulant-associated vascular injury, as amphetamine derivatives have been linked to vasculopathy, vasospasm, and vessel wall injury."

Assessing the AOU Database for Vascular Complications of Prescribed Stimulants
(AAN 2026)
- "Objective: To assess the All of Us (AOU) Database for Vascular Dissections occurring in patients prescribed amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, atomoxetine, and methylphenidate. Background: Greater than 5% of the American population use prescribed stimulants, including Adderall. Limited conclusions can be assessed without further controlling for other prescriptions, co-morbidities, and risk factors for dissection. This study displays an elevated risk profile compared to the literature-reported incidence. We recommend further investigation of the effect of prescription stimulants on arterial dissection."

To choose or not to choose: Examining the influence of choice on elicitation of subjective and objective prescription stimulant placebo effects in the laboratory.
(PubMed, Exp Clin Psychopharmacol)
- "College students (N = 183; Mage = 19.48, 92.9% White non-Hispanic, 77.0% female) were randomized into choice (n = 95; ability to choose to ingest 10 mg Adderall [actually placebo]) or no-choice (n = 88; randomly assigned to receive drug [actually placebo] or no drug) conditions before completing subjective effect measures and cognitive tasks...These results provide further evidence of medium-large placebo effects for subjective, but not objective, outcomes following expected prescription stimulant use. Considerations surrounding methodological alterations to laboratory procedures which improve ecological validity are recommended to better understand the influence of both choice and prescription stimulant placebo effects."

Running into Trouble: A Case of Acute Liver Failure From Severe Rhabdomyolysis After a Marathon
(ACG 2025)
- "We present the case of a healthy young adult who developed acute fulminant liver failure and renal failure following marathon-associated heat stroke and rhabdomyolysis, possibly exacerbated by Adderall use.Case Description/ A 21-year-old male with a history of ADHD on Adderall presented with altered mental status during a marathon after reportedly ingesting Adderall mid-race...The patient was treated with N-acetylcysteine, hemodialysis, lactulose, and supportive ICU care...While rhabdomyolysis is typically associated with renal complications, this case underscores its potential to precipitate acute liver failure. Prompt recognition, early ICU intervention, and multidisciplinary management can lead to full recovery even in fulminant presentations.Figure: Figure 1: Pathology image showing hepatic fibrosis."

Local Data, National Crisis: Pediatric ADHD Treatment Disruptions Amid 2024 Stimulant Shortages
(AACAP 2025)
- "All data used were deidentified. Of 51 total encounters, the most commonly affected medication was Vyvanse (n = 20, 39.2%), followed by Concerta (n = 14, 27.5%), Focalin XR (n = 10, 19.6%), Ritalin (n = 4, 7.8%), and Adderall (n = 3, 5.9%). These findings provide a real-time clinical snapshot of how stimulant shortages disrupted ADHD care among vulnerable pediatric populations. Even when prescriptions were ultimately filled, the process introduced delays, suboptimal substitutions, and increased burdens on families and providers. These disruptions risk exacerbating symptoms such as impulsivity, inattention, and emotional dysregulation in youth."

Double Trouble: A Hemodynamic and Therapeutic Challenge
(HFSA 2025)
- "Based on initial RHC hemodynamics (Table 1) she was started on inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) for RV afterload reduction to improve PA-RV coupling that led to marked hemodynamic improvement. The patient was cautiously transitioned to sildenafil and macitentan...With resting gradients persistently >50 mm Hg despite high dose BB therapy, disopyramide was initiated. The RHC hemodynamics diagnosed severe pre-capillary PH suspected to be due to Group 1 disease given history of chronic adderall use... This case highlights the challenging pathophysiology of concomitant pre-capillary PH and LVOTO, where treatment for one may exacerbate the other. Ischemic cardiomyopathy in a 43-year-old male with stroke during admission: the role of chronic amphetamine-dextroamphetamine use.
(PubMed, Int J Physiol Pathophysiol Pharmacol)
- "Cardiomyopathy associated with amphetamine-dextroamphetamine (Adderall) use is an emerging and under-recognized clinical concern, particularly in the context of chronic stimulant exposure...Unlike prior reports of reversible non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, this case required surgical revascularization, underscoring the irreversible nature of the damage in some patients. It uniquely highlights the synergistic contribution of stimulant-induced toxicity and underlying CAD to the development of severe cardiac dysfunction."

Examining College Students’ Exposure to Substance Use Disorders and Attitudes Toward Treatment
(CPDD 2025)
- " We recruited college students from introductory psychology courses to take a voluntary survey in which they were randomly presented a vignette where the protagonist met DSM-5 SUD criteria involving 1 of 7 substances (tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, Adderall, cocaine, Vicodin, and heroin)... Exposure to situations involving persons with SUDs appears to be common among college students. Participants’ generally positive beliefs about SUD treatment effectiveness 1 contrasted with the relatively high rates of perceived non-treatment seeking behaviors among their family or friends with SUD. Our findings support current research efforts to examine possible roles of students in assisting friends or family members with SUD to avail of treatment."
