Antimalarial compounds exhibit variant- and cell-type-specific activity against SARS-CoV-2 isolated in Panama.
(PubMed, Front Pharmacol)
- "In Calu-3 cells, a wider variety of compounds, including chloroquine (CQ), amodiaquine (AQ), artesunate (AS), lumefantrine (LUM), and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), were found to be effective against the Delta variant...Time-of-addition experiments suggested that CQ and primaquine (PQ) were ineffective during the viral adsorption phase but showed a dose-dependent antiviral effect against the A2.5 variant in the early replication phase, whereas the Delta variant showed resistance. This study underscores the critical role of selecting appropriate cell models for SARS-CoV-2 research, as drug efficacy varies between viral variants and host cell types."

From genome to drug targets: computational subtractive genomics reveals novel anti-filarial targets in Wuchereria bancrofti and identifies plant-based inhibitors of β-1,4-mannosyltransferase, a high-priority target.
(PubMed, Mol Divers)
- "The drugs albendazole (ALB), ivermectin (IVM), and diethylcarbamazine (DEC) are currently used to treat LF, but they are not effective against microfilariae and are known to have an inability to reverse chronic conditions, produce adverse reactions, and have developed drug resistance due to prolonged use...Further, structure-based virtual screening identified five potent phytochemicals (IMPPAT ID: 9,896,047, 49,777,225, 13,888,122, 89,483-03-4, and 14,605,093) having a better affinity with WbEGH. Furthermore, experimental validation of these identified phytochemicals would lead towards an effective method for controlling Lymphatic Filariasis."

The molecular basis of scabies itch
(SID 2025)
- "Despite its prevalence, current treatments, such as topical (permethrin) and oral (ivermectin), have limitations, including resistance, side effects, and incomplete efficacy...Furthermore, our data suggest that PAR1 is linked downstream to TRPV1, as evidenced by global knockout mice studies. Our findings reveal a novel signaling pathway (Sar s 1c/ PAR1/TRPV1) associated with scabies itch, providing a potential therapeutic target for the development of more effective treatments."

All patients in the right setting (known malignancy and medication associated with DS) should receive empiric treatment with steroids."

Diagnostic Challenge: Unmasking a Dual Lung Infection
(ATS 2025)
- "Despite aggressive fluid resuscitation, vasopressor support, and broad-spectrum antibiotics (vancomycin, meropenem), his hemodynamic status remained unstable, prompting endotracheal intubation followed by bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)...The patient was started on targeted antifungal therapy with itraconazole for histoplasmosis and ivermectin for strongyloidiasis, along with continued supportive care, including mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapy...Routine diagnostic tests, such as blood cultures, may not always identify the causative organisms, necessitating more invasive procedures like bronchoscopy with BAL. Dual infections with Histoplasma capsulatum and Strongyloides stercoralis, although rare, can complicate the clinical course and require early and aggressive management, which is key to improving patient outcomes in such complex scenarios."
