Penicillin Allergy Evaluation in Pediatric Patients: Safety of Testing without MDM and the Role of Testing to Ampicillin and Duplicate PrePen®
(AAAAI 2026)
- "Among 265 patients with negative skin testing who underwent oral challenge to a penicillin (primarily Conclusions Penicillin skin testing using penicillin G, PrePen®, and ampicillin—without MDM testing—demonstrated a NPV of 98%. Inclusion of ampicillin identified an additional 33 patients (26.4%) with positive results. These findings suggest MDM may not be necessary in pediatric penicillin allergy testing protocols and that ampicillin should be considered an essential component of penicillin testing."

A Case of Facial Nerve Palsy As the Initial Presentation of Early Neurosyphilis: A Diagnostic Challenge.
(PubMed, Cureus)
- "The patient showed rapid clinical improvement following treatment with intravenous penicillin G, though his course was complicated by a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. This case emphasizes the importance of considering neurosyphilis in the differential diagnosis of cranial neuropathies, particularly in at-risk populations, as early recognition and appropriate antimicrobial therapy are vital for optimal neurological outcomes."

Differences in β-lactamase activity and carbapenem resistance among the Bacillus cereus group.
(PubMed, Antimicrob Agents Chemother)
- "Although all B. luti isolates lacked carbapenemase genes, they exhibited higher minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranges for ampicillin and meropenem...All B. luti isolates and some B. mosaicus and B. cereus s.s. isolates displayed constitutive enzyme activity for penicillin G, whereas most B. mosaicus and B. cereus s.s. isolates displayed inducible activity, and five displayed silent activity...This is the first study to demonstrate interspecies variability within the B. cereus group regarding the presence of carbapenemase genes and β-lactam resistance profiles. These findings provide crucial insights into β-lactam resistance mechanisms in this bacterial group and provide a foundation for further research."

Progressive exacerbation of neurological symptoms in a patient with neurosyphilis following T9-T10 intradural space-occupying lesion resection: a case report.
(PubMed, Front Immunol)
- "The patient received a 14-day course of intravenous benzylpenicillin, which resulted in significant symptomatic improvement and restoration of most functions at discharge...The immunosuppressed state may contribute to the reactivation of syphilis spirochetes; therefore, it is important to consider this potential risk and take appropriate precautions when performing surgical treatments such as spinal surgery. Penicillin remains the therapeutic agent of choice for neurosyphilis, and early diagnosis and treatment are critical to the patient's prognosis."

External quality assessment in antimicrobial susceptibility testing (EUCAST disc diffusion methodology) of five anaerobic strains - performance of 35 laboratories in Germany and Austria, 2024.
(PubMed, Anaerobe)
- "A panel of five anaerobic bacterial strains (two Bacteroides fragilis, and one each of Phocaeicola vulgatus, Clostridium perfringens and Fusobacterium necrophorum) was tested by the participating laboratories against a panel of antibiotics (piperacillin-tazobactam, meropenem, metronidazole, clindamycin and/or benzylpenicillin) using the EUCAST disc diffusion methodology. This method was evaluated in comparison with the standard reference method, and categorical agreement with expected results was high (≥90%), with notable exceptions for piperacillin-tazobactam (88.6% and 80.0% in two of the five strains, respectively). The observed discrepancies underscore that the method requires local technical expertise in combination not only with continuous internal quality control but also with external quality assurance."

(PubMed, Lancet Microbe)
- "Treatment of bacterial meningitis is challenged by a rise of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens, particularly affecting patients in LMICs where access to effective treatment might be limited. Our findings call for the strengthening of national antimicrobial resistance surveillance systems to better tailor treatment guidelines and public health interventions."

Detection of Penicillium-Toxins in Nuts Commercialized in Italy Through LC-MS/MS Analyses.
(PubMed, Toxins (Basel))
- "Specifically, secondary metabolites produced by Penicillium spp., including ochratoxin A, patulin, citrinin, cyclopiazonic acid, citreoviridin, griseofulvin, meleagrin, mycophenolic acid, penitrem A, roquefortine C, penicillins G and V, sulochrin, andrastin A, asterriquinone, chaetoglobosin A, cyclopenin, cyclopenol, and viridicatin, were investigated. Besides Penicillium-toxins, aflatoxins were also analyzed with another validated LC-MS/MS method, but they were not detected in any sample. Although most Penicillium-toxins, and in particular patulin in nuts, are not currently regulated in the international legislation, they exert toxic effects on humans and animals, and their occurrence can represent a food safety risk."

Comparative insights into molecular characterization and resistance profiling of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus across dairy livestock in Pakistan.
(PubMed, Vet Res Commun)
- "Antibiogram of MRSA isolates revealed that dairy animals exhibited high resistance to penicillin G, cefoxitin, and gentamicin, but remained susceptible to ciprofloxacin and moxifloxacin. MRSA of sheep origin showed distinct resistance patterns, showing more sensitivity towards gentamicin and amoxicillin...In-silico analysis showed that all dairy animals in Pakistan shared conserved nucleotide and amino acid motifs. This study concludes that MRSA represents a serious threat to livestock health due to its multidrug-resistant properties, and antibiogram profiling can provide a valuable tool for guiding effective therapeutic interventions against MRSA infections."
