Bertolotti’s Syndrome as a Confounder in the Treatment of Low Back Pain
(AAPMed 2019)
- "Bertolotti’s syndrome, lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV), is a common anatomical variant with a prevalence of up to 35%, but it is an uncommon cause of back pain. Reported symptoms can overlap with facet pain, radiculopathy, and SI joint pain. Here we present two cases of low back pain confounded by the presence of concomitant LSTV and our management of their care. Case Presentation: Our first case is an 80-year-old female with low back pain from believed lumbar facet arthritis, spondylosis, and lumbar scoliosis....Interventional treatment with percutaneous injections under fluoroscopic guidance can be done easily in the office while simultaneously treating other pathology to maximize the patient’s benefit."
