Antibiotic Exposure and Early Reproductive Outcomes of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in a Chinese Couple-Based Preconception Cohort.
(PubMed, Environ Health (Wash))
- "In couple-based analyses, sulfaclozine, roxithromycin, sulfamonomethoxine, erythromycin, and penicillin V were positively related to several early IVF reproductive outcomes, while sulfamethoxazole, penicillin G, chlorotetracycline, norfloxacin, florfenicol amine (FFA), sulfadiazine, cyadox, and sulfachloropyridazine were negatively related to early IVF outcomes. The association between parental antibiotic exposure and IVF outcomes requires further validation in a larger cohort of couples. Additionally, the extrapolation of our results to the general childbearing-aged couples requires caution as infertile couples may be more susceptible to antibiotics."

Understanding selective aminopenicillin allergy: findings from a long-term case series.
(PubMed, Int Arch Allergy Immunol)
- "All patients underwent a standardized work-up including skin prick and intradermal tests, patch tests and/or delayed intradermal testing when indicated, specific IgE measurement in immediate reactions, and drug challenge tests (DCT) with amoxicillin or amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. Notably, all patients tolerated phenoxymethylpenicillin (penicillin V) during DCT, confirming selective sensitization to the aminopenicillin side chain and supporting the safe use of other β-lactams in this population. These findings highlight the clinical relevance of selective aminopenicillin allergy and underscore the importance of comprehensive diagnostic algorithms to optimize antibiotic stewardship and expand therapeutic options for labeled β-lactam-allergic patients."

RHEUMATIC FEVER IS STILL HERE: A CASE OF ACUTE RHEUMATIC FEVER IN A YOUNG ADULT
(ACC 2026)
- "For his third episode, he was prescribed azithromycin due to reaction to amoxicillin during the prior episode...He was treated for ARF with azithromycin, colchicine, and ibuprofen...While penicillin G benzathine is the first line treatment and would be ideal for secondary prophylaxis, due to frequent shortages in nonendemic regions, azithromycin or penicillin V are acceptable alternatives... In the US, the yearly incidence of ARF remains 10 per 100,000, though adult cases are rare. Generally, timely treatment of GAS pharyngitis prevents development of ARF, but up to one-third of treated patients may still acquire ARF. This case demonstrates the importance of being able to identify and treat ARF, even in an adult treated for GAS in a non-endemic country."

Antibiotic use and gut microbiome composition links from individual-level prescription data of 14,979 individuals.
(PubMed, Nat Med)
- "Clindamycin, fluoroquinolones and flucloxacillin accounted for most of the associations with the abundance of individual species. Use of these antibiotics 4-8 years earlier was associated with altered abundance of 10-15% of the species studied; penicillin V, extended-spectrum penicillins and nitrofurantoin were associated with only a few species. Similar results were found comparing one antibiotic course 4-8 years before sampling versus none in the past 8 years. These findings indicate that antibiotics may have long-lasting consequences for the gut microbiome."

Alport Syndrome Unmasked by NSAID- and Antibiotic-Associated Acute Kidney Injury in an Adolescent: A Rare Presentation of Rapidly Progressive Renal Failure
(NKF-SCM 2026)
- "METHODS/CASE SUMMARY A 19-year-old male with no known medical history presented with fatigue, leg pain, and near-syncope after 10 days of ibuprofen and penicillin V for dental pain. These presentations may mimic AIN, underscoring the importance of recognizing that severe AKI at a young age may reflect an inherited glomerular disorder. Early biopsy, genetic evaluation, and timely planning for long-term renal management are essential to optimize outcomes."

Therapy with Targeted-Release Budesonide and Iptacopan in Rapidly Progressive IgA Nephropathy: A Case Report
(NKF-SCM 2026)
- "Given the acute clinical deterioration, he received three days of intravenous methylprednisolone pulses followed by oral prednisone 40 mg daily (cyclophosphamide withheld)...He received vaccinations against encapsulated bacteria and penicillin V prophylaxis 500 mg twice daily...CONCLUSION This case demonstrates the feasibility and potential efficacy of combining TRF-budesonide and alternative complement pathway inhibition in high-risk, rapidly progressive IgAN. By simultaneously addressing mucosal Gd-IgA1 production (upstream) and complement-mediated glomerular injury (downstream), this dual mechanistic approach may offer superior disease modification compared with traditional nonspecific immunosuppression, supporting its consideration in contemporary management of aggressive IgAN presentations."

Amoxicillin-induced Erythema Scarlatiniforme Desquamativum Recidivans with cross-reactivity to cefadroxil in a child: A case report and review of literature.
(PubMed, Br J Clin Pharmacol)
- "This case establishes the first report of generalized ESDR triggered by amoxicillin in a paediatric patient. It emphasizes a unique pattern of drug hypersensitivity, characterized by cross-reactivity to cefadroxil and tolerance to other tested penicillins (phenoxymethylpenicillin and oxacillin). It is essential to conduct a complete allergy work-up, which includes OPTs, to conduct a customized cross-reactivity assessment. This assessment is essential for the safe guidance of future therapeutic decisions in patients with drug-induced ESDR."

A rare presentation of actinomycotic mycetoma of the hand: a case report.
(PubMed, BMC Infect Dis)
- "This case underscores that mycetoma can present without classic sinus tracts, leading to diagnostic delay. A high index of suspicion and the use of histopathological and molecular methods are essential for diagnosis. Prolonged, targeted antibiotic therapy is the cornerstone of management, though advanced disease may result in a slower response."

Can the remuneration scheme of general practitioners affect their antibiotic prescription behaviour?
(PubMed, Health Econ Rev)
- "Remuneration schemes may influence antibiotic prescribing behaviour. FFS/CAP is linked to higher prescription rates and broader-spectrum antibiotic use among regular GPs, likely due to patient retention and time-efficiency incentives. Policy interventions, such as monitoring of prescriptions depending on the remuneration type or adjustments to the remuneration scheme (e.g., antibiotic-related pay-for-performance), could promote prudent prescribing. Further research is needed on prescription appropriateness and quality impacts."

Validation of an LC-MS/MS multi-residue method for nine antibiotic classes in eggs according to EU regulation 2021/808 and assessment of their occurrence on Croatian poultry farms.
(PubMed, Food Addit Contam Part A Chem Anal Control Expo Ri)
- "Under Commission Regulation (EU) No 37/2010, only penicillin V, erythromycin A, lincomycin, tylosin A, tylvalosin, tiamulin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline are permitted for use in laying hens, with established maximum residue levels (MRL). Three samples were found to be non-compliant, as they contained doxycycline and enrofloxacin residues above the decision limit. Compliance was confirmed for four samples in which residues of tiamulin and enrofloxacin were below the decision limit."

Antibiotic Prescription Patterns in Poland in the Years 2019-2024 Based on Reimbursement Data from the National Healthcare Fund.
(PubMed, Antibiotics (Basel))
- "Although the use of phenoxymethylpenicillin initially decreased after the introduction of "strep-tests" in 2022 (DID 0.18 in 2023 vs. 0.23 in 2022), it increased again to 0.26 in 2024. Our findings demonstrate a slight continuous increase in oral antibiotic use in Poland, despite the current widespread availability of POC testing. The persistent and growing preference for amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, an agent not typically recommended as first-line treatment for most infections, suggests that antibiotic stewardship efforts need to continue in order to curb inappropriate prescription."

Dual-species biofilm formation of Pseudomonas fluorescens and Hafnia alvei and their susceptibility to penicillin V acylase from Lactiplantibacillus plantarum YP4-1-2.
(PubMed, Int J Food Microbiol)
- "Additionally, LpPVA down-regulated QS-related genes and biofilm-related genes to inhibit biofilm formation. The study demonstrates that the interactions between P. fluorescens and H. alvei in a dual-species promoted the formation of complex biofilm structures by increasing AHLs, and their sensitivity to LpPVA provides a novel strategy for controlling multi-species contamination in aquatic products."

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on antibiotic treatment for respiratory tract infections in Norwegian primary care.
(PubMed, Scand J Prim Health Care)
- "During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of macrolides, specifically azithromycin, for respiratory tract infections (RTIs) in primary care increased in several countries...Over half of all antibiotic treatments for RTIs were phenoxymethylpenicillin, and the distribution of antibiotic types was relatively stable during the study period, except for some temporary changes in the initial months of the pandemic...DGP handled most of the influx of RTIs during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in primary care. During the pandemic antibiotic treatment for RTIs was reduced, and the distribution of antibiotic types barely changed."

Improving antibiotic prescribing in LMICs: Insights from an outpatient clinic in Pakistan.
(PubMed, New Microbes New Infect)
- "Metronidazole was the single most common agent, followed by first-generation cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, and amoxicillin-clavulanate; phenoxymethylpenicillin and amoxicillin were only minimally prescribed. Antibiotic prescribing was excessive and discordant with recommended first-line therapies, favouring broad-spectrum agents and combination treatments - practices likely influenced by the negligible time available per patient. Our findings highlight the need to adapt antimicrobial stewardship interventions to limited-resource contexts."

Rumpel-Leede Phenomenon Secondary to Acute Epstein-Barr Virus Infection in a Young Adult.
(PubMed, Cureus)
- "We report the case of a 20‑year‑old male patient who initially presented with a pruritic widespread maculopapular rash following a course of Penicillin V in the context of an undiagnosed Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and subsequently developed a petechial rash consistent with RLS, following application of a tourniquet prior to venepuncture...EBV serology was consistent with acute EBV infection. No specific treatment was indicated or provided for the Rumpel-Leede phenomenon, which gradually resolved. This case highlights that RLS may occur in the setting of acute EBV infection even in the absence of thrombocytopenia or coagulopathy and underscores the importance of recognition to avoid unnecessary alarm or investigations."

Availability and Cost of Basic Drugs for Sickle Cell Disease in 13 African Countries
(ASH 2023)
- "Participants completed questions covering the availability (on a scale from 0 (drug not available) to 10 (no availability concern) and the cost of basic drugs in their centres: HU, penicillin V, folic acid, morphine and vaccines. The high cost of vaccines, beyond the first years of life when a free national program is available in most of African countries, is also a problem. In addition to cost, availability and frequent supply disruptions prevent regular intake of hydroxyurea and, to a lesser extent, of penicillin V. International solidarity and the governments of these countries should work to bring down the cost of hydroxyurea and improve the distribution circuit for these essential medicines."
