Development of synergistic antifungal in situ gel of miconazole nitrate loaded microemulsion as a novel approach to treat vaginal candidiasis.
(PubMed, Sci Rep)
- "After incorporation of the selected formulation into a mixture of P407 and P188 (18:2% w/w) with 0.6% mucoadhesive polymer, the resultant MG formulation (MG1) revealed optimum gelation temperature (33 ± 0.01℃) and appropriate viscosity with enhanced sustained release (98%) and retention through sheep vaginal mucosa, MG1 exhibited a better MIZ compared to the 2% MN gel formulation and the marketed MN product, and no rabbit vagina irritation. In conclusion, the miconazole nitrate-loaded MG-based formula sustained the duration of action and better antifungal activity than the marketed miconazole nitrate formulation."

Development, optimization, and evaluation of a nanostructured lipid carrier of sesame oil loaded with miconazole for the treatment of oral candidiasis.
(PubMed, Drug Deliv)
- "Additionally, an in vivo efficacy study in terms of the ulcer index against C. albicans found a superior result for the optimized MZ-SO NLC (0.5 ± 0.50) in a treated group of animals. Hence, it can be concluded that MZ, through an optimized NLC of SO, can treat candidiasis effectively by inhibiting the growth of C. albicans."

Phytotherapy in the management of denture stomatitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
(PubMed, Phytother Res)
- "There was no difference in the relief of clinical signs (odds ratio (OR) = 0.96; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.43-2.15) and microbiological improvement (OR = 1.74; 95% CI: 0.55-5.45) between propolis and miconazole. Most of the included studies showed that phytomedicines had fewer side effects and more patient satisfaction than antifungals or disinfectants. However, further RCTs with more standardly prepared herbal formulations are required to verify the clinical efficacy of phytotherapy as an alternative or adjunctive therapy for denture stomatitis."

Lead optimization generates selenium-containing miconazole CYP51 inhibitors with improved pharmacological profile for the treatment of fungal infections.
(PubMed, Eur J Med Chem)
- "In addition, molecular docking studies provide a model for the interaction between the compound B17 and the CYP51 protein. Overall, we believe that these selenium-containing miconazole compounds can be further developed for the potential treatment of fungal infections."

Inhibitory Effect of Eugenol and Trans-Anethole Alone and in Combination with Antifungal Medicines on Candida albicans Clinical Isolates.
(PubMed, Chem Biodivers)
- "Achieved results indicated that eugenol showed synergistic and additive activities with miconazole and econazole against investigated clinical isolates, respectively. We tried to relate the results to changes in C. albicans cell sheaths under the influence of essential oils compounds (EOCs) performing the Fourier transform infrared spectra analysis to confirm the presence of particular chemical moieties in C. albicans cells. Nevertheless, no strong relationships was observed between synergistic and additive actions of used EOC-AMs combinations and chemical moieties in C. albicans cells."

Miconazole induces autophagic death in glioblastoma cells via reactive oxygen species-mediated endoplasmic reticulum stress.
(PubMed, Oncol Lett)
- "The inhibition of ER stress via treatment with 4-phenylbutyric acid or BiP knockdown reduced miconazole-induced autophagy and cell death. These findings suggest that miconazole induces autophagic cell death by inducing an ROS-dependent ER stress response in U251MG glioma cancer cells and provide new insights into the potential antiproliferative effects of miconazole."
