Macrophage-microRNA-147 Protects Against Atherosclerosis in Mice (ATVB-PVD-GPM 2019) - "...We aim to study the role of miR-147 in macrophages during atherosclerosis.Bone marrow derived macrophages were isolated from mice with myeloid-specific deletion of the miR-147 gene [Apoe-/-LysMcreMir147+/+ (M-Mir147+/+) and Apoe-/-LysMcreMir147flox/flox (M-Mir147-/-)]...The increased lesion size in aortic roots was associated with increased macrophage content, increased lipid content and macrophage apoptosis, reduced efficiency of efferocytosis and enlarged necrotic core area.Our results suggest that miR-147 counter-regulates inflammatory activation of macrophages and reduces lipid accumulation and cell death. Thus, miR-147 plays a protective role against atherosclerosis by limiting necrotic core formation."
