Association of antibiotics with Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis: a real-world pharmacovigilance study.
(PubMed, Int J Antimicrob Agents)
- "Antibiotics including penicillins, cephalosporins, azithromycin, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, vancomycin, doxycycline, and gentamicin are associated with an increased risk of SJS/TEN, with sulfamethoxazole presenting the highest risk. Patients with pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and sepsis are particularly vulnerable. These findings highlight the need for personalized antibiotic regimens based on infection site and patient gender."

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on the Presence of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in Africa from a One Health Perspective.
(PubMed, Microorganisms)
- "The pooled prevalence of antibiotic resistance was observed to be 96.5%, 82.8%, 76.8%, 70.7%, 62.1%, 50.4%, and 40.2% for cefoxitin, ampicillin, cefuroxime, nitrofurantoin, amikacin, amoxiclav, and ciprofloxacin, respectively. This distribution highlights the interconnectedness between animals, the environment, and human populations in the transmission and persistence of this pathogen and the need to implement a suitable and appropriate One Health pathogenic and antimicrobial resistance surveillance system in the African region."

Sickle Cell Disease and Antimicrobial Resistance: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
(PubMed, Infect Dis Rep)
- "For S. aureus, the pooled resistance was highest for penicillins (ampicillin = 100%; penicillin = 93.64%; and amoxicillin = 77.82%) followed by cefuroxime (51.23%)...SCD patients had 2.89 and 2.47 times higher odds of being colonized or infected with penicillin-resistant and erythromycin-resistant S. aureus strains, respectively...SCD patients have an increased risk of resistance to penicillin and co-trimoxazole across several bacterial pathogens. The limited geographical distribution of the included studies underscores the urgent need for expanded AMR research on the subject, especially in regions with high SCD burden."

Bacteriological Profile of Diabetic Foot Ulcer With Special Reference to Biofilm Formation.
(PubMed, Cureus)
- "On antibiotic sensitivity of organisms tested against each antibiotic, more than 75% of tested samples were resistant to ampicillin, cefuroxime, and erythromycin, and around 70% and more of tested samples were sensitive to ertapenem, meropenem, amikacin, gentamicin, benzylpenicillin, vancomycin, and clindamycin. Conclusion The ability to form biofilms adds immensely to the virulence and antibiotic resistance. Detection of biofilm formers is non-invasive and convenient to measure and would help provide insight into antibiotics to be administered to the patient, thereby reducing development of MDROs and reducing healing time."

Structural and Functional Insight into Intracameral Cefuroxime Ocular Toxic Syndrome (ICOTS) in Eyes with Disrupted Intraocular Barrier.
(PubMed, Ophthalmol Ther)
- "Intracameral cefuroxime ocular toxic syndrome may induce persistent retinal changes despite fluid resolution in eyes with a disrupted intraocular barrier due to prior vitrectomy. Early OCT assessment can help to identify this condition. Further investigation, incorporating UWF-OCTA and ERG for a comprehensive assessment of ICOTS, along with revised informed consent protocols for patients undergoing cataract surgery with this antibiotic prophylaxis, may be indicated when risk factors are identified."

DO THE REDEFINED EUCAST DEFINITIONS WARRANT ADJUSTMENT OF PAEDIATRIC ANTIBIOTIC DOSAGES? A PHYSIOLOGICALLY-BASED PHARMACOKINETIC MODELLING APPROACH
(ESPID 2025)
- "Method For amoxicillin, ceftazidime, cefuroxime, and ciprofloxacin, we used existing PBPK models and verified them with adult and paediatric clinical pharmacokinetic data. Conclusions/Learning Points In contrast to adults, there is no need to increase currently recommended paediatric antibiotic dosages for the included drugs. At the same time, further simulations showed that, in case of therapy failure, individualization of doses should be considered in both adults and children, especially in severe infections with micro-organisms with known relatively high minimal inhibitory concentrations."

PROPENSITY-SCORE MATCHED COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PARENTERAL PENICILLIN G VS. CEFUROXIME/CEFTRIAXONE FOR THE TREATMENT OF COMMUNITY-ACQUIRED PNEUMONIA IN HOSPITALIZED CHILDREN IN THE POST-PNEUMOCOCCAL CONJUGATE VACCINE ERA
(ESPID 2025)
- "Multivariate analysis showed that penicillin G was associated with reduced LOS [4.2 days (95% CI: 3.8-4.6) vs. 4.8 days (95% CI: 4.5-5.0); p<0.001]. Conclusions/Learning Points Parenteral penicillin G demonstrated equivalent clinical efficacy to cefuroxime/ceftriaxone in children hospitalized for non-complicated CAP and was associated with a shorter LOS, potentially facilitating an earlier transition to oral therapy."

Cataracts: A Review.
(PubMed, JAMA)
- "Systemic α1-adrenergic antagonists for symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia, such as tamsulosin, increase the risk of surgical complications and some ophthalmologists temporarily discontinue the drug preoperatively. Intraocular antibiotics, such as moxifloxacin or cefuroxime, delivered intraoperatively have reduced the rates of sight-threatening postsurgical endophthalmitis from 0.07% to 0.02%...Cataracts are common among older adults and may cause visual disability and blindness without treatment. Cataract surgery reverses and prevents progressive vision loss, and advanced technology lens implants facilitate reduced dependence on eyeglasses."

Genomic characterization and drug resistance of Bordetella pseudohinzii first isolated from wild niviventer.
(PubMed, BMC Microbiol)
- "The first isolation of B. pseudohinzii from the lung tissue of wild niviventer was reported, and the limitations of traditional methods for identifying B. pseudohinzii were demonstrated. We highlight the superiority of WGS for accurate species identification. The findings reveal a complex pathogenic profile and notable antibiotic resistance, providing important insights for the future prevention and treatment of B. pseudohinzii infections in humans, as well as underscoring the need for monitoring B. pseudohinzii in rodent populations."
