Rapid and Efficient Aerosol Delivery During 60 L/min High Flow Nasal Cannula Therapy-In Vitro Development of a Novel Dry Powder Delivery Platform.
(PubMed, AAPS PharmSciTech)
- "Experiments were conducted using an anatomically-realistic in vitro adult nasal airway model with physiological breathing patterns, albuterol sulfate excipient enhanced growth (AS-EEG) dry powder formulation, air-jet aerosolization engine, and custom air actuation system...While nose-throat (NT) deposition in HFT-IC3 remained high (39.6%), this approach presents an attractive target for future computational and experimental optimization. These findings prove that efficient dry powder aerosol lung delivery during 60 L/min humidified HFT is achievable, laying the groundwork for translational advances in the efficient delivery of pulmonary therapies such as surfactants, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and antivirals during ventilatory support."

Integrative transcriptomic and experimental analysis identifies collagen-associated hub genes bridging chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis and lung cancer.
(PubMed, Comput Biol Chem)
- "In vitro validation demonstrated that albuterol sulfate (salbutamol) exhibited moderate cytotoxicity toward A549 lung cancer cells (IC₅₀ = 150 µg/mL) with markedly reduced toxicity in WI38 normal lung fibroblasts, supporting its selective anticancer activity with minimal effects on normal human cells. Overall, this study highlights the central role of collagen dysregulation in linking CHP and LC, and demonstrates how integrating in silico, in vitro, and clinical analyses, together with molecular docking approaches, can uncover novel therapeutic insights for fibrotic and oncogenic pathologies."

Development of an Advanced Manufacturing Technology for Continuous Drug Substance Production.
(PubMed, Ind Eng Chem Res)
- "We describe the early conceptual development of a candidate advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) which enables the synthesis of albuterol sulfate, a bronchodilator used for the treatment of asthma, and an API currently listed on the FDA's drug shortage list...Analytical characterization via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), LC mass spectrometry (LC-MS), gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID), and in-line nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) are utilized to assess composition and purity throughout the process. The results presented herein enable scale-up of an automated continuous manufacturing system as it provides a means of exceeding batch efficiency during the production of liquid drug formulations; a strategy which can reduce capital costs, eliminate drug shortages, and strengthen America's pharmaceutical supply chain resiliency."

Late Breaking Abstract - Improved aerosol drug delivery during adult invasive mechanical ventilation with independent humidity control
(ERS 2025)
- "In a bench study setup, albuterol sulfate solution was nebulized into an adult IMV circuit with a vibrating-mesh nebulizer...Regional lung deposition simulations suggest that around 40% of the measured delivered dose would deposit in healthy lungs. In conclusion, we found that the delivered dose and thus the lung deposited dose can be improved significantly by enabling independent humidity control inside the adult IMV circuit during aerosol drug delivery."

Preliminary investigation of concurrent aerosol delivery with the HAMILTON-HF90 system
(ERS 2025)

The HAMILTON-HF90 high flow system with in-line Aerogen Solo VMN and Pro-X controller successfully delivered aerosol to the level of the trachea of an unassisted, spontaneously breathing adult nose- throat model."

Assessment of drug permeability using a small airway microphysiological system.
(PubMed, Front Pharmacol)
- "Insignificant nonspecific binding to the MPS was observed with albuterol sulfate, formoterol fumarate, and olodaterol hydrochloride (HCl), while fluticasone furoate showed significant nonspecific binding as only 6%-44% of the drug was recovered at 30 and 120 min, respectively. Taken together, the small airway MPS recapitulated relevant cell types and many morphological features in the lung. The apparent permeabilities measured indicated that albuterol sulfate and formoterol fumarate would be categorized as highly permeable, while olodaterol HCl would be categorized as a low permeable drug."
