Neither American Football Playing Position Nor Total Years Playing Football Are Associated with Neurobehavioral Health Outcomes: An NFL-LONG Study.
(PubMed, Curr Sports Med Rep)
- "Playing position was categorized as offensive/defensive linemen, running back/linebacker/tight end, quarterback/wide receiver/defensive back, and special teams...There was no significant difference in years played across playing positions, and no statistically or clinically significant findings linking position, years played, or their interaction with negative neurobehavioral outcomes. These findings suggest concussion history should be directly assessed and considered alongside other exposure indicators to better understand neurobehavioral outcomes."

Shoulder Pain - Football
(ACSM 2025)
- "HISTORY: This is a 16-year-old left hand dominant male linebacker and running back for his High School team... - Right Shoulder Ultrasound: anechoic fluid around an intact long head tendon of the biceps.- Right Shoulder X-Ray: No fracturesSUBSEQUENT CLINICAL COURSE Over the following 2 weeks, the athlete developed worsening anterior right shoulder pain. He had been working with a physical therapist and an athletic trainer who noticed weakening of the right shoulder. Repeat physical examination demonstrates 4/5 strength in scaption and external rotation."

Health Outcomes Following A Collegiate Football Career: Findings From The NCAA-DoD CARE Consortium
(ACSM 2025)
- "Separate generalized linear models were used to assess outcome scores by football playing position (noncontact male athlete [referent], linemen, quarterback, special teams, tight end/linebacker/halfback, receiver/defensive back) and diagnosed concussion history (noncontact: 0 [referent], 0 [football], 1-2 [football], 3+ [football])... Self-reported health outcomes were not significantly different between football players and non-contact male athletes at the end of a collegiate career, though a single difference was reported on life satisfaction among linemen. Further evaluation of health-related outcomes in collegiate football players years following university departure is warranted."

The Relationship Between Head Impact Kinematics And Player Position In Youth Football
(ACSM 2025)
- "Running Back, Receiver, and Linebacker athletes had higher PRV compared to Defensive Line athletes, while Quarterback and Offensive Line athletes had lower PRV (Table 1)... Position-specific differences in PLA and PRV may be a result of the movement patterns required by each position. Offensive Line athletes typically focus on maintaining their position and blocking, while Defensive Line athletes often initiate contact while attempting to break through the Offensive Line, therefore moving at greater velocity, which may lead to higher PLA and PRV. Similarly, Running Backs, Receivers, and Linebackers are involved in more open-field play, where they may experience higher-speed collisions, resulting in higher PRV.Table 1"

Muscle-to-Bone Ratio in NCAA Division I Collegiate Football Players by Position.
(PubMed, J Strength Cond Res)
- "College football players were categorized by positions defined as offensive linemen (OL), defensive linemen (DL), tight end, linebacker (LB), running back (RB), punter or kicker, quarterback (QB), defensive back (DB), and wide receiver (WR)...In addition, RB had significantly higher total MBR (18.8 ± 1.3) than DB (18.1 ± 1.3) and WR (18.1 ± 1.3). This study may provide athletes and training staff with normative values when evaluating total and regional MBR with DXA."

Muscle-to-bone Ratio In Division I Collegiate Football Players By Position
(ACSM 2023)
- "CFP were categorized by positions defined as: offensive line (OL), defensive line (DL), tight end (TE), linebacker (LB), running back (RB), punter/kicker (PK), quarterback (QB), defensive back (DB), wide receiver (WR), and special teams (ST)... These results demonstrate differences in body composition and trunk MBR in CFP compared to an aged-matched population. In CFP, total MBR differed by position. These relationships allow for football personnel to better understand the effects of training overall, as well as position specific training."

Positional Differences In Muscle-to-bone Ratios Of National Football League Players
(ACSM 2023)
- "NFL players were categorized by positions defined as: offensive line (OL), defensive line (DL), tight end (TE), linebacker (LB), running back (RB), punter/kicker (PK), quarterback (QB), defensive back (DB), and wide receiver (WR)... When NFL players were categorized by their offensive or defensive position for comparison, no differences in total MBR were observed. However, leg MBR varied among NFL players. In general, positions that mirrored each had similar leg MBRs."

Neck Pain In A High School Football Player
(ACSM 2023)
- "HISTORY: A 17-year-old high school football linebacker with type 1 diabetes mellitus sustained a helmet-to-helmet collision with the ball carrier during kickoff return... X-ray of cervical spine: No fracture. Trace anterior listhesis of C3 on C4, C4 on C5, and C5 on C6MRI of cervical spine obtained due to abnormal x-rays: Bone marrow edema in the anterior superior endplate of C7 could reflect a contusion or tiny fracture. Mildly desiccated C4-5 disc space with a small right foraminal protrusion resulting in mild foraminal stenosis.FINAL/WORKING DIAGNOSIS: 1."

Differences in head impact biomechanics between playing positions in Canadian high school football players.
(PubMed, J Sports Sci)
- "Thirty nine players from two high-school football teams were recruited and assigned a position profile: Profile 1 (quarterback, receiver, defensive back, kicker), Profile 2 (linebacker, running back), and Profile 3 (linemen)...Time between impacts was lowest in Profile 3, followed by Profiles 2 and 1. This study delivers a new method of reducing the multidimensionality of head impact magnitudes and suggests different Canadian high-school football playing positions experience different head impact magnitudes and frequencies, which is important for monitoring concussion and repetitive head impact exposure."

Player Position and Labral Tear Location and Size in NCAA Division I Football Players Undergoing Arthroscopic Surgery.
(PubMed, Orthop J Sports Med)
- "Players were divided into 3 groups: line players (offensive and defensive linemen, defensive end), skill players (defensive back, wide receiver, running back, and quarterback), and hybrid players (linebacker and tight end)...There was a positive correlation between labral tear size and number of suture anchors (0; P = .010). In this study of NCAA Division I football players, skill players had a higher proportion of anteroinferior labral tears, and hybrid players had a higher proportion of posterosuperior labral tears."

Shoulder, upper arm and elbow injuries in high school men's American football.
(PubMed, Res Sports Med)
- "Most injuries occurred in older athletes (juniors and seniors, 30% and 32%, respectively), were related to tackling (31%), and in running back and linebacker positions (15% each). Position-Specific Physical Workload Intensities in American Collegiate Football Training.
(PubMed, J Strength Cond Res)
- "Players were involved in individualized skill (indy), team playbook (team), and special team (ST) drills during practice and analyzed for their specialist offensive or defensive role (e.g., linebacker or wide receiver)...The findings may be informative for coaches to tailor physical workloads of practice drills for positional roles in preparation for games and practices. Player tracking technology can add value for strength and conditioning coaches to adjust training programs based on position-specific on-field demands of players."
