Complicated Two-Phase Phacoemulsification Due To Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome In A Hypermature Cataract Patient With Ankylosing Spondylitis Who Did Not Use Alfa1-Adrenergic Receptor Antagonist Medicine, Management: Case Report
(ESCRS 2024)
- "Preoperative poor dilatation of the pupil was observed despite using a combination of phenylephrine 2,5%, cyclopentolate 1,0%, tropicamide 1,0% eye drops used for preoperative pupil dilatation of the left eye. All risk factors should be considered prior to surgery․ Preoperative pupil adequate dilatation is a crucial component, particularly for hypermature cataracts. Adequate fluid parameters during phacoemulsification, as well as intraoperative use of mechanical interventions and pharmacological therapies in such cases, are very important."

The effect of three different mydriatic eye drops on retinal vessel diameters.
(PubMed, Cutan Ocul Toxicol)
- "To investigate the effects of topically applied 1% tropicamide, 2.5% phenylephrine and 1% cyclopentolate on retinal vessel calliper (VC) using optical coherence tomography (OCT). There was no statistically significant change in the mean sum of SRA and IRA VC and the mean sum of SRV and IRV VC before and after dilatation drops in all three groups. Dilatation drops have no statistically significant effect on retinal artery and vein VC."

A rare case of spontaneous hyphema secondary to gestational alloimmune liver disease.
(PubMed, J AAPOS)
- "We report the case of an infant who was born with unilateral hyphema and was subsequently found to have gestational alloimmune liver disease-a condition where maternal antibodies attack the infant's liver, leading to a hypocoagulable state. Our patient was treated with topical prednisolone and cyclopentolate/phenylephrine, with subsequent resolution of the hyphema."

Changes in ocular biometrics following cycloplegic refraction in strabismic and amblyopic children.
(PubMed, Medicine (Baltimore))
- "Ocular biometry was measured before and after instilling 1% cyclopentolate and 0.5% phenylephrine/0.5% tropicamide. Refractive error shifts hyperopically in esotropia subgroup (ET) and myopically in high myopia subgroup (HM), eldest subgroup (G3) relating more to anterior segment changes than AL/Km. Understanding cycloplegic effects on biometry is important for optimizing refractive correction in these patients."

Spanish Eyes: A Phenylephrine Hypersensitivity Case Series
(AAAAI 2024)
- "Body Rationale: The most used mydriatics eyedrops (ME) in Spain are phenylephrine, tropicamide and cyclopentolate, being phenylephrine the main responsible for allergy reaction. We report 14 cases of phenylephrine allergy contact conjunctivitis, being diagnosed by PT 57.1%. Because of the low sensitivity of PT, SBCT must be performed to confirm diagnosis. It´s important to highlight that SBCT can be a problem in our patients due to their elder age."

Scleral Lens Visual Rehabilitation after Selective Endothelial Removal in Peters Anomaly
(ASCRS-ASOA 2023)
- "Purpose Peters’ Anomaly is a rare congenital anterior segment dysgenesis with variable presentation of corneal opacities. We describe an infant diagnosed with Peters’ Anomaly Type 1 who was visually rehabilitated with a novel impression based scleral lens (IBSL) and Selective Endothelial Removal (SERM).MethodsA 0-day old male was seen in the hospital after vaginal delivery for corneal clouding. He was born full term and otherwise healthy. Both corneas had central haze R greater than L with iridocorneal adhesions and no cataract. He was diagnosed with Peters’ Anomaly and started on cyclopentolate/phenylephrine OU.He continued this chronically outpatient and was prescribed glasses.Sensory nystagmus developed at 3 months.Amblyopia was managed with patching OS, and he was fit with gas permeable contact lenses OU. He did well for 6 months, but the lenses could not be modified enough to ensure a good fit.Optical iridectomy and SERM of OD were performed at 6 months old..."

Efficacy of a drug-soaked contact lens to achieve target pupillary dilation for UV light treatment of light adjustable IOLs.
(ARVO 2022)
- "One set consisted of one drop each of 1% Tropicamide, 10% Phenylephrine, and 1% Cyclopentolate. Our results show that administration of a soaked CL produced adequate dilation for LAL treatments. It was comparable to administering drops at 5-minute intervals, and outperformed one-time drop administration. This confers a significant benefit to patient comfort in the clinic and minimizes interruptions to the clinic schedule during the dilation period."

Cycloplegic Autorefraction as a Substitute for Cycloplegic Retinoscopy in the Pediatric Population.
(PubMed, J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus)
- "In this small sample population, cycloplegic autorefraction was comparable to cycloplegic retinoscopy. Recognition of amblyopia should still prompt evaluation by a pediatric ophthalmologist. Further research is necessary to confirm whether uncomplicated refractive error in children may be sufficiently detected and managed by a comprehensive ophthalmologist. (PubMed, Br J Clin Pharmacol)
- "71 studies on mydriatics/cycloplegics, intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering therapies, antihypertensives, adrenergic antagonists, statins, corticosteroids, hydroxychloroquine, isotretinoin, hormonal contraceptives, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, antipsychotics, anti-neoplastic agents, ethanol, caffeine, and nicotine were included in this review...Cyclopentolate and phenylephrine are associated with a CT reduction...Tropicamide, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, statins, corticosteroids, hydroxychloroquine and hormonal contraceptives have mixed findings...Statins and candesartan decrease macrophage accumulation and Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1 expression in the choroid. The choroid and its response to various disease processes and systemic medication can be further investigated to improve patient care, particularly in patients with choroid and retina pathologies."

Primary congenital glaucoma-associated truncation of GJA1 modeled in mice
(ARVO 2020)
- "Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured by rebound tonometry at baseline, and after provocation (intra-peritoneal saline bolus and cyclomydril pupillary dilation). Results Gross assessment of Het mice revealed soft tissue syndactyly in 4%...Defects in the outflow pathway are suggested by narrowing of the drainage angle, ultrastructural abnormalities in the SC/TM, and a near 2-fold increase in IOP delta under provoked conditions. Glaucoma in individuals with GJA1 mutations may be attributable to narrow angles."
