Understanding the menopause transition in sickle cell disease: An analysis of the implementation of the adapted menopause quick 6
(ASH 2025)
- "Treatment use included hydroxyurea (45%mean dose: 1117 ± 444 mg/day; median: 1000), chronic exchange transfusion (10%), L-glutamine (2%),and voxelotor (7%). Half reported chronic opioid use (mean: 113 ± 115 MME/day), and 21% were takingmedications against neuropathic pain (e.g., gabapentin)...Midlife women with SCD report a substantial burden of menopausal symptoms—particularly hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and joint pain. Symptom burden appears influenced by age and hematologicparameters, while disease-modifying therapies may mitigate reported symptoms or individuals withsevere disease may not experience the typical hormonal related menopausal symptoms. These findingslay some foundational groundwork for future studies examining the interplay between disease severity, treatment, and reproductive aging in women with SCD."

Persistent organic pollutants in migratory birds from wetlands of southern Primorye, Russia.
(PubMed, Sci Total Environ)
- "The total POP content in feathers ranged from 0.4 to 44.5 ng/g dry weight (dw); in muscles, from 9.0 to 282.4 ng/g lipid weight (lw); and in the liver, from 12.1 to 1117.1 ng/g lw...The observed differences between the species in POP accumulation are associated with their ecological characteristics including diet, migration routes, and habitats. The results show that the pollution levels in southern Primorye are lower or comparable to those reported for other Asian regions, but the global background of pesticides still continues to have an impact on ecosystems."

Machine learning-assisted prediction of speech outcomes at age 5 in patients with nonsyndromic cleft palate after double-opposing Z-plasty.
(PubMed, J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg)
- "This retrospective cohort comprised 1117 patients with nonsyndromic cleft palate (NSCP) who underwent double-opposing Z-plasty (DOZ) by a single surgeon between 1988 and 2017...Early small fistulae contributed moderately to hypernasality prediction but were negligible for therapy prediction. This machine learning model, implemented as a web-based calculator (https://cp-speech.mdbcdss.com/), provides an accessible decision-support tool for early risk stratification of speech outcomes at age 5 after DOZ in patients with NSCP."

Prevalence and associated plasmid resistant genome of ESBL and AmpC producing commensal E. coli isolated from lactating cows and pre-weaned calves on dairy farms in Western Australia.
(PubMed, Prev Vet Med)
- "Phenotypic analysis of 1117 faecal samples from 26 Western Australian dairy farms revealed a low overall prevalence (7.3 %) of ESBL and/or AmpC-producing commensal E. coli, with 3.2 % in cows (n = 633) and 12.8 % in calves (n = 484). All isolates were classified 'non-wildtype' for ampicillin and ceftiofur, with 95.1 % classified as 'non-wildtype' multidrug resistant (MDR)...Multiple correspondence analysis (with chi-square-based 95 % confidence ellipses) showed variation in pDNA AMR genes and replicons by farm, with generally distinct plasmid profiles, though some clustering suggests possible farm-to-farm plasmid transmission. In conclusion, though low in prevalence, ESBL and/or AmpC producing commensal E. coli having high phenotypic AMR, MDR, and pDNA diversity were isolated from dairy cattle on 65.4 % of screened farms."

A continuous-wave photon-pair source operating in L-band through spontaneous four-wave mixing in birefringent ZBLAN fiber.
(PubMed, Sci Rep)
- "Then, we experimentally generated signal and idler photons with center wavelengths of 1117 and 1578 nm using a 1310 nm CW laser as a pump light source and measured their quantum optical properties. The maximum coincidence-to-accidental ratio was calculated to be 22, resulting in a photon-pair brightness of 3.16 × 104 pairs/s/nm/mW. The results show the feasibility of using ZBLAN fibers in quantum optics as an efficient platform for generating a quantum light source."

Acupuncture for polycystic ovary syndrome.
(PubMed, Cochrane Database Syst Rev)
- "We found no clear evidence of a difference between acupuncture and sham acupuncture in rates of live birth, multiple pregnancy, ovulation, clinical pregnancy, miscarriage, or restoration of regular menstrual periods. Acupuncture is probably associated with a greater risk of adverse events. It is unclear whether acupuncture improves ovulation rate compared with relaxation or Diane-35. In studies that compared acupuncture with exercise, no intervention, clomiphene, and Diane-35, adverse events reported in the acupuncture group included vaginal bleeding, weight gain, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and subcutaneous haematoma. The limited number of RCTs and variability in outcome reporting mean that the effectiveness of acupuncture for PCOS remains uncertain."

Exploring the role of the gut microbiome in gout: Prospective analysis of dietary fiber intake and the risk of gout
(ACR Convergence 2025)
- "We used multivariable Cox proportional hazard models to evaluate the associations between quintiles of dietary fiber intake and incident gout. We documented 1117 gout cases over 2,218,527 person-years of follow-up... Long-term dietary intake of fiber, particularly fiber sourced from cereals and fruits, is independently associated with a lower risk of incident gout among women. These findings support a role for fiber in the pathogenesis of gout, potentially by modulating the gut microbiome."

(PubMed, Zootaxa)
- "Rhabdias aegyptiaca differs from other African congeners in the combination of the following characteristics: truncate anterior end, buccal capsule 1117 (15 0.4) m wide, four submedian circumoral lips with two lateral pseudolabia, esophagus with dilatation at end of first third and tail wholly covered with inflated cuticle except for its end tip...Rhabdias bufonis sensu Moravec, Baru & Ryav, 1987 is considered a highly likely stand-alone Saharo-Arabian species, distinguished from the complex of Rhabdias bufonis (Schrank, 1788) Stiles & Hassall, 1905 by its pre-equatorial vulva, and largely sized buccal capsule and eggs. However, their specimens still need futural re-investigation for an appropriate description and designating type specimens."

Transcriptomic and gut microbiome markers of treatment-resistant schizophrenia
(ECNP 2025)
- "TRS has been suggested to be heritable, and the elucidation of its molecular underpinnings would be of help to move towards early detection and treatment with clozapine, the only antipsychotic approved for TRS...Analyses of the gut microbiota composition showed lower alpha-diversity in patients with TRS based on the ACE (Mann-Whitney U = 1142, p = 0.03) and Fisher (Mann-Whitney U = 1117, p = 0.048) metrics, but not the Chao1 (Mann-Whitney U = 1106, p = 0.06) and Shannon metrics (Mann-Whitney U = 927, p = 0.76)... Our findings suggest overexpression of the XIST lncRNA (previously suggested to be involved in schizophrenia and affective disorders), lower gut microbiome diversity and differences in the abundance of specific gut microbiome features in patients with TRS."
