A mitochondria-targeted idebenone derivative W1a mitigates cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury by preserving mitochondrial integrity and suppressing neuroinflammation.
(PubMed, Bioorg Chem)
- "To overcome these challenges, we synthesized W1a, a novel IDE derivative conjugated to the mitochondria-targeting peptide SS-20, designed to enhance mitochondrial localization and pharmacodynamic activity. Moreover, W1a inhibited microglial and astrocytic activation, further supporting its anti-inflammatory efficacy. Collectively, our findings establish W1a as a potent neuroprotective agent that targets mitochondrial dysfunction and neuroinflammation drivers of CIRI pathology, offering a promising therapeutic strategy for ischemic stroke."

Characterizing Pregnancy Outcomes in a Humanized Mouse Model of Sickle Cell Disease
(ASH 2023)
- "We observed: reduced litter sizes (AA 6.9 ± 1.5 embryos vs SS 5.2 ± 1.2 embryos**), fetal weight (AA 0.49 ± 0.14g vs SS 0.38 ± 0.16g*), viability of embryos (AA 100.0% IQR 0.0 vs SS 20.0% IQR 33.3****), and maternal mortality (AA 0.0% vs SS 8.7%, OR = 4.3 ns)... SCD mice demonstrate many similar pregnancy outcomes as humans, allowing for increased translational application. We've shown these outcomes to be severe and largely driven by vascular impairment specifically within the placenta, the main maternal-fetal interface. This study serves as the groundwork for future studies aimed at investigating the underlying mechanisms of these outcomes while also establishing baseline measures and novel methods of approach towards the broader goal of improving obstetric disparities faced by women with SCD."

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:Describe how to navigate the oral health and medical dilemmas associated with patients who undergo antiresorptive therapy.Understand management options for patients with various stages of MRONJ and how to provide the best outcomes for improving oral health and quality of life.Recognize anatomic changes, risk factors and potential complications that impact outcome when treating MRONJ.Discuss current evidence related to the pathogenesis of osteonecrosis of the jaw."

Characterizing pregnancy outcomes in a humanized mouse model of sickle cell disease.
(PubMed, Br J Haematol)
- "As such, we identified worsened outcomes including reduced litter sizes (haemoglobin HbSS (SS) 5.18 ± 1.25 embryos vs. haemoglobin HbAA (AA) 6.86 ± 1.51**), fetal weight (SS 0.38 ± 0.16 g vs. AA 0.49 ± 0.14 g**), viability of embryos (SS 20.00% interquartile range (IQR) 33.33 vs. AA 100.00% IQR 0.0***) and maternal mortality (SS 7.14% (2/28) vs. AA 0.00% (0/27) odds ratio (OR) = 4.82 ns)...These results serve as a cornerstone characterization of pregnancy outcomes in the SCD mouse model while highlighting the implications of placental vascular insufficiency. They further demonstrate both the utility and limitations of the model, emphasizing the need for continued clinical assessment."

Study of Monitoring the Effects of Intravenous Immunoglobulin Therapy in Patients with Multifocal Motor Neuropathy
(AAN 2025)
- "There are significant fluctuations in the condition of patients with MMN on chronic IVIg therapy. Very high sensitivity of MRC-SS, especially MRC-SS-20 for detecting clinically significant changes, was shown. Adjustment of dose and frequency of administration of IVIg therapy should be catered to the individual needs of each patient with MMN."

Mitohormesis during advanced stages of Duchenne muscular dystrophy reveals a redox-sensitive creatine pathway that can be enhanced by the mitochondrial-targeting peptide SBT-20.
(PubMed, Redox Biol)
- "Separate results demonstrate that creatine-dependent bioenergetics can also be enhanced with a ROS-lowering mitochondrial-targeting peptide. These results demonstrate a specific relationship between redox stress and mitochondrial hormetic reprogramming during dystrophin deficiency with proof-of-principle evidence that creatine-dependent bioenergetics could be modified with mitochondrial-targeting small peptide therapeutics."

Co-Existence of Oxazolidinone Resistance Genes cfr(D) and optrA on Two Streptococcus parasuis Isolates from Swine.
(PubMed, Antibiotics (Basel))
- "The optrA and cfr(D) genes were identified in two S. parasuis strains named SS17 and SS20, respectively...The cfr(D) was flanked by GMP synthase and IS1202. The findings of this study extend the current knowledge of the genetic background of optrA and cfr(D) and indicate that Tn554 and IS1202 may play an important role in the transmission of optrA and cfr(D), respectively."

Halomonas getboli sp. nov., a halotolerant bacteria isolated from a salt flat.
(PubMed, Int J Syst Evol Microbiol)
- "The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain YJPS3-2 was closely related to those of Halomonas halophila F5-7 (98.75 %), Halomonas salina F8-11 (98.74 %), Halomonas smyrnensis AAD6 (98.66 %), Halomonas organivorans G-16.1 (98.34 %), Halomonas koreensis SS20 (97.98 %) and Halomonas beimenensis NTU-107 (96.93 %)...The DNA G+C content of strain YJPS3-2 is 68.1mol %. Based on the polyphasic taxonomic evidence presented in this study, YJPS3-2 should be classified as representing a novel species within the genus Halmonas, for which name Halomonas getboli is proposed, with the type strain YJPS3-2 (= KCTC 92124=KACC 22561=JCM 35085)."

In conclusion, the Gerbich blood group system should be considered as one causative agent of unusual antibodies to red cell antigens, in routine patients and pregnant women, especially when originating from the Middle East."

Protective effect of a mitochondria-targeting peptide against paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy.
(PubMed, Chem Biol Drug Des)
- "Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a major side effect of several anticancer agents including paclitaxel, a chemotherapeutic drug widely used in cancer treatment. Concomitant administration of SS-20 protected against the development of the neuropathy. Our results suggest that SS-20 may be a drug candidate for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy."

One year of digital teaching in psychiatry as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic: Knowledge gain and content evaluation of medical students for two summer semesters in 2020 and 2021.
(PubMed, PLoS One)
- "One year after the introduction of digital teaching formats at our university medical center (department of psychiatry and psychotherapy), teaching evaluation of students from summer semesters 2020 and 2021 (SS20, SS21) were compared...However, sustainability of this teaching format should be monitored critically: The subject of psychiatry and psychotherapy thrives on direct communication, which can be compromised when using digital formats only. In this light, implementation of more interactive formats in digital teaching is discussed."
