Comprehensive examination of demographic, psychological, cognitive, biochemical, and genetic profiles of methamphetamine addicts.
(PubMed, J Genet Eng Biotechnol)
- "The findings underscore the impact of prolonged MA use on neurochemical balance and gene expression, contributing to the development of aggressive behaviors and addictive patterns. Tailored treatment strategies that integrate genetic and psychological profiling, along with longitudinal monitoring, are essential to address the multifactorial nature of methamphetamine addiction and improve clinical outcomes."

Integrative metabolomics and machine learning reveal diagnostic biomarkers for gelsenicine intoxication.
(PubMed, J Ethnopharmacol)
- "By combining untargeted metabolomics with ML, a classification model based on creatinine, Val-Ser, and Tyr-Phe was established. The model effectively distinguishes GFI from multiple hypoxia-related deaths and demonstrates high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, indicating its potential for forensic precision identification and clinical diagnosis of gelsenicine poisoning."

Fentanyl test strip use and homelessness among people who use drugs in Rhode Island.
(PubMed, Int J Drug Policy)
- "We found that housing status was not independently and longitudinally associated with FTS use; however, people who used crystal methamphetamine were more than twice as likely to have used FTS in the past month. Future research exploring how differential housing situations may affect uptake of harm reduction services is needed to prevent fentanyl overdose."

A Novel Care Navigation Intervention for Patients with Methamphetamine Use Disorder.
(PubMed, Community Ment Health J)
- "Among 94 patients who received this intervention as part of a randomized controlled trial, 64% were considered engaged with at least 2 or more visits with the care navigator Patients had substantial barriers to care-85% of patients were not stably housed, 83% were unemployed, and 46% lacked access to a phone-and the most common domains of need were accessing addiction treatment, housing resources, or communication needs such as a phone or interpreter services. This intervention poses a model for connecting patients with MaUD to treatment after acute care encounters."

From Synaptic Plasticity to Neurotoxicity: Endocannabinoid Influence on Addiction and Neurodegeneration.
(PubMed, Int J Mol Sci)
- "Chronic exposure to drugs of abuse, including alcohol, opioids, cocaine, and methamphetamine, perturbs eCBS homeostasis, promoting oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and protein aggregation-pathological features common to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis...Despite these advances, critical gaps remain in delineating how substance-induced eCBS alterations precipitate neurodegenerative cascades. Addressing these gaps will be essential for harnessing the eCBS as a therapeutic target to mitigate addiction-driven neurotoxicity and age-related cognitive decline."

Methamphetamine and neuroHIV suppress astrocytic potassium channel function in the medial prefrontal cortex via different mechanisms.
(PubMed, Front Pharmacol)
- "Collectively, these findings demonstrate that Meth and neuroHIV inhibit astrocyte function, which could exacerbate mPFC neuronal dysfunction in MUD and/or neuroHIV. They also suggest that Meth- and neuroHIV-induced astrocytic K+ channel function was mediated by TAAR1-and/or chemokine receptor-coupled signaling pathways."

Insomnia is associated with psychological distress in individuals with methamphetamine dependence.
(PubMed, Australas Psychiatry)
- "This study examined the relationship between insomnia severity and psychological distress in treatment-seeking individuals with methamphetamine dependence.MethodsThis is a secondary cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 152 participants enrolled in a randomised controlled trial of lisdexamfetamine versus placebo for methamphetamine dependence. In adjusted models, insomnia remained associated with distress: each 1-point ISI increase related to a 2.1-2.5% rise in DASS-21 depression and stress scores (β = 0.021-0.025, p = .003-.007), and a 6.5% increase in total scores (β = 0.063, p < .001); the association with anxiety was attenuated.ConclusionsOur study identified insomnia as an independent correlate of psychological distress in treatment-seeking individuals with methamphetamine dependence. Findings underscore sleep problems' relevance and support further research into sleep-focused interventions."

Bioaccumulation of Psychoactive Contaminants and Their Effects on Brain-Gonad-Sperm Neurotransmitter Networks in Fish.
(PubMed, Environ Sci Technol)
- "Here, we investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of a mixture of seven PSYCs (citalopram, donepezil, gabapentin, methamphetamine, sertraline, tramadol, and venlafaxine) on European perch (Perca fluviatilis) during a 23 day exposure. No significant changes were observed in gonadal histopathology or sperm-quality parameters; however, the observed molecular alterations suggest potential consequences under longer or chronic exposures. These findings identify sperm as a previously overlooked target for psychoactive pollutants and reveal neurochemical disruption along the brain-gonad-sperm axis as a previously unrecognized mechanism through which PSYCs may affect fish physiology."

Evaluation of mitochondrial DNA copy number alterations and their clinical correlates in methamphetamine use disorder.
(PubMed, J Psychiatr Res)
- "No significant associations were found between mtDNA copy number and psychometric scale scores or clinical characteristics, including history of suicide attempts, self-mutilation, violent behavior, hospitalization, withdrawal symptoms, or drug-induced psychosis (p > .05). In summary, our results indicate a marked decrease in peripheral blood mtDNA copy number among individuals with MUD, along with a significant inverse relationship between mtDNA copy number and the duration of substance use, suggesting cumulative mitochondrial stress associated with chronic methamphetamine exposure."

Substances and substance combinations among accidental substance-related acute toxicity deaths (AATDs) in Canada from 2016 to 2017.
(PubMed, BMC Public Health)
- "Fentanyl, cocaine, alcohol, and methamphetamine were the top substances contributing to the 7,902 AATDs identified between 2016 and 2017 in Canada. Opioids and stimulants are both detected in and contribute to a majority of AATDs, but the substance-related acute toxicity death crisis is complex and attributable to many substance classes. Understanding these differences will allow for targeted substance-related policies, prevention, and harm reduction efforts."
