Toxicity Profiling of Biosurfactants Produced by Novel Marine Bacterial Strains. (PubMed, Int J Mol Sci) - "Finally, both 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonicacid) (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) cell-free assays, revealed no significant anti-oxidant capacity for neither of the tested compounds. Consequently, the absence of significant cytotoxicity and/or mutagenicity justifies their commercial exploitation and potential development into industrial end-user applications as natural and environmentally friendly biosurfactants."

Erythropoietin Stimulates GABAergic Maturation in the Mouse Hippocampus. (PubMed, eNeuro) - "We show that EPORs are expressed on pyramidal cells, therefore the impact of EPO on GABAergic maturation is likely to be indirect. Our data show that EPO can modulate hippocampal network maturation and support ongoing trials of the use of EPO in clinical neonatology to stimulate neuronal maturation after perinatal brain injury."

A Single Atom Change Facilitates the Membrane Transport of Green Fluorescent Proteins in Mammalian Cells. (PubMed, Angew Chem Int Ed Engl) - "Herein, we show for the first time that a single atom change, hydrogen to halogen, at one of the tyrosine residues can increase the cellular entry of 28 kDa green fluorescent protein (GFP) in mammalian cells. The protein uptake is facilitated by a receptor-mediated endocytosis and the cargo can be released effectively into cytosol by co-treatment with the endosomolytic peptide ppTG21."

Reconstitution of autophagosome nucleation defines Atg9 vesicles as seeds for membrane formation. (PubMed, Science) - "In selective autophagy, these reactions could potentially be coupled to the cargo via the Atg19-Atg11-Atg9 interactions. We thus propose that Atg9 vesicles form seeds that establish membrane contact sites to initiate lipid transfer from compartments such as the endoplasmic reticulum."

Characterization of Two EF-hand Domain-containing Proteins from Toxoplasma gondii. Study of transcranial therapy 904 nm in experimental model of stroke. (PubMed, Lasers Med Sci) - "Suspension test results indicate an improvement of TG muscle resistance when compared with baseline evaluation (BLT); a reduction in open-field freezing time and the number of fecal bolus pellets suggest diminished anxiety induced by 904-nm LED treatment on treatment days 7 and 21 (TG7 and TG21) compared with the baseline results; and lastly, histological analysis showed important signs of neurogenesis in TG in comparison to CG, especially on treatment days 7 and 21 (TG7 and TG21). In conclusion, the present study suggests that 904-nm LED irradiation may beneficially affect neurogenesis, muscle resistance, and animal motor behavior following ischemic CVA."

DNA G-quadruplexes binding and antitumor activity of palladium aryl oxime ligand complexes encapsulated in either albumin or algal cellulose nanoparticles. (PubMed, Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces) - "In addition, the cytotoxicity of these complexes on MCF-7 cancer cells and PBMC normal cells was evaluated and compared with cisplatin under similar experimental conditions. Furthermore, to determine and verify the interaction mode of these compounds with G-quadruplex, the molecular docking technique was also performed. Our data clearly demonstrated that complex 2 had higher activity and cytotoxicity than that of complex 1 and could be further investigated in the future as a drug discovery platform."
