(PubMed, Reprod Med Biol)
- "Talaporfin-PDT showed excellent efficacy, safety, and fertility preservation in CIN2-3, supporting its potential as a non-excisional alternative. This study was registered in the Japan Registry of Clinical Trials (jRCT) under the identifier jRCT2041190087."

Prognostic Factors and Talaporfin Sodium Concentration in Photodynamic Therapy for Recurrent Grade 4 Glioma
(SNO 2025)
- "TS concentration is a critical determinant of PDT efficacy, especially in recurrent glioma, highlighting its prognostic significance. Alb may affect treatment outcomes by mediating TS binding. RNA-seq findings imply that low TS concentrations may suppress immune and stress response-related genes, potentially diminishing PDT sensitivity."

Antitumor effects of a novel glucose-conjugated bacteriochlorin for photodynamic therapy.
(PubMed, Sci Rep)
- "Talaporfin sodium (TS), widely used in Japan, has shown limited efficacy in advanced tumors, highlighting the need for novel PSs...PDT with Glc-TFPB significantly suppressed tumor growth in xenografted mice, with greater efficacy at 24 h than at 2 h after administration. These findings indicate that Glc-TFPB is a promising next-generation PS with improved tumor selectivity, deeper tissue penetration, and superior photodynamic efficacy, supporting its potential for clinical translation."

TALAPORFIN SODIUM PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY AS A SALVAGE TREATMENT FOR LOCALLY RECURRENT ESOPHAGEAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA: EFFICACY AND SAFETY EVALUATION
(UEGW 2025)
- "TS-PDT demonstrated high local control rates and favorable survival outcomes, making it a promising salvage therapy for ESCC recurrence post-CRT/RT (4). Despite some adverse events, its minimal invasiveness and reduced phototoxicity enhance its applicability, particularly in elderly or high-risk patients. The effectiveness of multiple PDT sessions supports its role as a flexible treatment strategy."

Talaporfin-Mediated Photodynamic Therapy Enhances Antitumor Immunity via the ROS/HIF-1α/PD-L1 Pathway in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
(ERS 2025)
- "Notably, the upregulation of PD-L1 and HIF-1α induced by PDT was reversed by N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an ROS inhibitor, and the knockdown of the HIF1A gene also reversed PDT-induced PD- L1 expression. Talaporfin-mediated PDT exhibits potent anti- tumor effects in NSCLC, potentially through activation of the ROS/HIF-1α/PD-L1 signaling pathway. The combination of PDT with PD-L1 blockade represents a promising strategy for enhancing the efficacy of PDT by modulating the tumor immune microenvironment."

Metachronous esophageal squamous cell carcinoma suspected as a second malignancy arising at the site of post-radiotherapy for esophageal adenocarcinoma.
(PubMed, Clin J Gastroenterol)
- "Complete remission was achieved through chemotherapy with docetaxel, cisplatin, and S-1, followed by intensity-modulated radiation therapy...Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with talaporfin sodium was administered, resulting in complete response without complications...This report underscores the importance of vigilant post-treatment surveillance and the need for tailored management strategies. Future research should focus on understanding the mechanisms of radiation-induced carcinogenesis, evaluating the long-term outcomes of PDT, and developing preventive strategies to enhance patient care and outcomes."

(PubMed, J Neurooncol)
- "PDT offers a novel targeted approach for improving local control of GBM. With continued innovation in photosensitizer design, delivery technologies, and combinatorial strategies, PDT holds promise as a viable therapeutic adjunct in GBM treatment. Further clinical validation through randomized controlled trials is warranted to establish its efficacy and gain regulatory approval with the eventual goal of integration into standard neuro-oncology practice."

- "Given that GSC resistance is partly attributed to hypoxic microenvironments that diminish treatment-induced oxidative damage, these findings suggest that strategies to enhance tissue oxygenation could improve the therapeutic efficacy of NPe6-PDT against GSCs. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate NPe6-PDT in patient-derived GSCs and provides a foundation for future translational research."

cGAS-STING Pathway Activation Enhances Antitumor Effect of Talaporfin Photodynamic Therapy Through ROS Production.
(PubMed, Cancer Sci)
- "Furthermore, the efficacy of STING agonist (2'-3'-cyclic GMP-AMP sodium and ADU-S100) and TS-PDT combination was assessed in a xenograft tumor model. STING is an important regulator of cellular ROS homeostasis and tumor cell susceptibility to ROS in PDT. Combining a STING agonist with PDT could enhance its therapeutic efficacy and may have potential for future clinical applications."

NOVEL PHOTOSENSITIZER METAL-CONJUGATED MALTOTRIOS CHLORINS WITH ENHANCED WATER SOLUBILITY FOR PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY AND IMPROVED THERAPEUTIC EFFICACY THROUGH THE HEAVY ATOM EFFECT
(DDW 2025)
- "The IC 50 of M (Mal 3 -chlorin)-PDT is approximately 10 times lower than that of drugs currently used (Talaporfin sodium), suggesting that a stronger therapeutic effect could be achieved with smaller amount of the agent. Our findings suggest that M (Mal 3 -Chlorin) could serve as a promising photosensitizer due to its notable anti-tumor PDT effect."

Mono-HOPE Versus Dual-HOPE in Liver Transplantation: A Propensity Score-Matched Evaluation of Early Graft Outcome.
(PubMed, Transpl Int)

Assuming that larger cohorts and long-term follow-up data confirm this, additional cannulation of the hepatic artery during machine perfusion in hypothermic conditions may not be beneficial."

Screening of photosensitizers-ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporter interactions in vitro.
(PubMed, Cancer Drug Resist)
- " The ABCG2 inhibitor (fumitremorgin C) and P-gp inhibitor (valspodar) effectively blocked the transport mediated by ABCG2 and P-gp of rose bengal and BPD... In summary, our study provided new knowledge that temoporfin, talaporfin sodium, methylene blue, and indocyanine green are not substrates of ABCG2, P-gp, or MRP1...Rose bengal is a substrate of ABCG2, P-gp, and MRP1. The results presented here indicate ABC transporter substrate status as a possible cause for cellular resistance to photodynamic therapy with rose bengal, redaporfin, and BPD."
