Venetoclax-Based Measurable Residual Disease Directed Therapy in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Is Associated with Emergent TP53 Microclones in Remission
(ASH 2024)
- "Venetoclax (VEN) combined with low-dose cytarabine (LDAC) is highly effective in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with either measurable residual disease (MRD) or oligoblastic (5-15% blasts) relapse (VALDAC study) (Tiong et al, JCO 2024)...We next focused on 104 persisting or emerging TP53 variants in 17/22 pts post-VEN...These data give insights into resistance of the hematopoietic compartment to VEN-based therapy. The expansion of specific TP53 and/or BAX-mutated clones at relapse likely involves additional aberrations and requires further study."

Wideband Absorbance Among Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and Non-Aboriginal Children With Suspected Otitis Media Living in an Australian Urban Area.
(PubMed, Ear Hear)
- "For this sample of children living in an urban area, WBA is significantly reduced in the ears of children with suspected OM compared with those children with healthy middle ears. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children without suspected OM show comparable WBA results to non-Aboriginal children with normal ears. However, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children with suspected OM exhibit lower overall WBA than their non-Aboriginal peers with OM, with a significant difference observed at 800 Hz. These findings support previous research that suggests WBA may be a valuable tool in detecting OM, particularly in high-risk populations. Further research is needed to investigate the factors contributing to reduced WBA in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children with OM and to validate WBA's potential in addressing the under-detection of OM in this population."

Lateral Atlantoaxial (C1-C2) Joint Steroid Injections: A 22-Year Retrospective Characterization of Technique and Clinical Outcomes.
(PubMed, Pain Med)
- "This study comprises the largest cohort of patients with image-guided lateral atlantoaxial joint injections and provides descriptive data on technique, clinical outcomes, adverse events, and observed subsequent cervical fusion rates. Short-term reductions in pain were common 1-month from injections with no serious adverse events identified throughout follow-up and only one-quarter of patients undergoing eventual cervical fusion. This study adds valuable data to an uncommonly performed procedure."

An Audit of Eye-Protection Practices in ENT-Related Facial Nerve Palsy: A Retrospective Review of Discharge Summaries.
(PubMed, Cureus)
- "Materials and methods A retrospective review was conducted on 104 discharge summaries from the Department of ENT - Head and Neck Surgery, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, over a 32-month period (from January 2023 to August 2025)...Conclusion While basic eye-care instructions were frequently documented, critical elements such as corneal assessment and ophthalmology referral were often missing. Several discharge summaries were inadequate, emphasizing the need for standardized, comprehensive documentation to improve patient safety and reduce preventable ocular morbidity in ENT-related FNP."

Vitamin B12 and D status in long-term vegetarians: Impact of diet duration and subtypes in Beijing, China.
(PubMed, Asia Pac J Clin Nutr)
- "This study reveals a dual challenge among Beijing long-term vegetarians: vitamin B12 deficiency was strongly associated with the degree of exclusion of animal products from the diet (veganism), while vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent and worsened with longer diet duration. The near-universal vitamin D deficiency observed in this study suggests that, in the Beijing context, the risk may extend beyond dietary choice, potentially reflecting regional environmental factors; however, this requires confirmation through comparative studies with omnivores controls."

A Study of the Etiology, Clinical Profile, and Outcome of Nontraumatic Cases of Impaired/Altered Sensorium in Patients Attending the Emergency Department in a South Indian Tertiary Care Hospital.
(PubMed, J Assoc Physicians India)
- "In this study, the duration of altered mental status, GCS score, level of altered consciousness, and etiology were found to be significant prognostic markers that correlated with outcome in nontraumatic cases with impaired/altered sensorium. Factors that offer early prognostic information can help with resource allocation decisions because the cost of intensive care has increased significantly. The prognosis can be predicted using a simple clinical evaluation of neurological function, paying particular attention to the degree of consciousness, focal neurological signs, and brainstem reflexes."

Myelodysplasia-Related Gene Mutations for NGS-Based MRD Assessment in Acute Myeloid Leukemia
(ASH 2023)
- " MRD was assessed on 104 adult newly-diagnosed AML patients (median age 58.6) with a total of 166 MRGM, resulting in a median of one MRGM per patient (range 1-4)... 65.4% of AML-MRGM patients in CR/CRi remained MRD positive when MRGMs were used for MRD assessment by NGS. MRD positivity was associated with age above 60 years and male sex. Using all MRG mutations for MRD assessment at a threshold of 0.01% or by various degrees of log-reduction was not predictive of outcome after intensive induction chemotherapy."

Application of Next-Generation Cytogenetics in a Clinical Laboratory for Diagnostic Work-up of Myelodysplastic Syndromes/Neoplasms (MDS)
(ASH 2024)
- "Based on CBA, 26 (24%), 51 (48%) and 28 (26.7%) patients had normal, non-complex and complex karyotypes respectively.OGM was performed on 104 patients (in one patient, there were not enough cells)...In contrary, even though limit of detection of OGM is similar to CBA (10-20%), OGM missed clonal (seen in at least 2 metaphases) abnormalities in 5 cases due to absence of proliferative bias, underscoring the necessity of performing CBA work-up in parallel.Conclusions. OGM is a powerful tool for identification of genome-wide chromosomal abnormalities and can be used to accurately apply WHO5 and ICC classification criteria."

Overall Survival and Duration of Treatment in Patients with Advanced Systemic Mastocytosis Receiving Avapritinib Versus Midostaurin or Best Available Therapy in a Real-World Setting
(ASH 2024)
- P=N/A, P2 | "Mean age at treatment initiation was 66.6 and 65.5 years and mean duration of follow-up was 22.1 and 25.2 months, respectively, in the avapritinib (n=67) and BAT (n=73) cohorts; 73 BAT pts contributed data on 104 lines of therapy (LOTs). Agent-level information was available for 89 LOTs in the BAT cohort, and common 2L+ agents received were midostaurin (46.1%), cladribine (32.6%), and hydroxyurea (7.9%)...The results from this study also affirm that AdvSM pts with prior treatment experienced significantly improved OS and DOT on avapritinib compared to pts treated with BAT in the real world. These data offer important insights on the superior efficacy of avapritinib as compared to available therapies for pts with AdvSM and may help inform treatment decisions."
