PAIN TREATMENT EFFICACY IN PATIENTS WITH FUNCTIONAL AND MOTILITY DISORDERS
(DDW 2020)
- "Overall, narcotics, PPIs, tramadol, bentyl/levsin, benzodiazepines, gastric stimulators, dietary interventions, marijuana, massage, meditation, and exercise were perceived as better than probiotics (p<0.0005 in all comparisons). Many commonly used pharmacologic therapies were perceived negatively or neutral compared to probiotics, including SSRIs, SNRIs, mirtazapine, buspirone, TCAs, and gabapentin... Overall patient perceived efficacy of the treatments remained low with significant variability in ratings, highlighting the need for more effective, non-narcotic therapies for the management of chronic abdominal pain. Overall, CAM therapies outperformed many commonly used pharmacologic agents in subjective ratings and should continue to be emphasized and incorporated into the treatment of chronic abdominal pain in FMDs."
