Total darkness activated intestinal clock system and improved intestinal barrier function in growing rabbits.
(PubMed, BMC Microbiol)
- "Dark treatment significantly increased gene expression of claudin-1, mucin1 in duodenum, occludin-1, claudin-1, zona occludens 1 (ZO1), junctional adhesion molecule 2 (JAM2) and interleukin 10 (IL10) in jejunum, claudin-1, mucin1, ZO1 and IL10 in ileum and clock, melatonin 1 A, melatonin 1B, and period1 in cecum compared with normal light group...There is an insignificant increasing tendency of acetic acid and propionic acid content of soft feces in total dark group. In conclusion, total dark treatment improves feed conversion efficiency in rabbits and activates cecum clock system, which increased diversity of bacterial flora and production of short-chain fatty acids, then increases intestinal barrier function."

Under the Hood: Understanding the Features of Mucin in Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.
(PubMed, J Clin Med)
- "Secreted mucins 2 and 5AC and membrane-associated mucin-1 were the primary components of mucin in both cellular and acellular tumor specimens...Our findings suggest that the presence of MUC-2 and mucin colonization by Pseudomonas are characteristic features of both cellular and acellular disease. These results may have significant implications for the diagnosis and treatment of this rare entity."

The Responses of Lactobacillus reuteri LR1 or Antibiotic on Intestinal Barrier Function and Microbiota in the Cecum of Pigs.
(PubMed, Front Microbiol)
- "However, the mRNA expression of tight junction proteins zonula occluden-1 (ZO-1) and occludin were increased by AO in the cecum of pigs on day 14, while LR increased the mRNA expression of intestinal barrier-related proteins ZO-1, occludin, mucin-1, mucin-2, PG1-5, and pBD2 in the cecum of pigs on days 14 and 164 (P < 0.05)...The microflora and their metabolite SCFAs were significantly changed along with age. These findings provide important information to understand the homeostasis of the cecum of pigs after antibiotic or probiotic treatment."

Alterations in intestinal microbiota composition coincide with impaired intestinal morphology and dysfunctional ileal immune response in growing-finishing pigs under constant chronic heat stress.
(PubMed, J Anim Sci Biotechnol)
- "Intestinal morphological injuries and ileal immune response caused by constant chronic HS independent of FI showed close connections with alterations in intestinal microbiota in growing-finishing pigs."

Dietary supplementation with Clostridium butyricum improves growth performance of broilers by regulating intestinal microbiota and mucosal epithelial cells.
(PubMed, Anim Nutr)
- "The relative expression of some genes associated with intestinal barrier function (claudins 2, 15, 19, and 23, tight junction proteins 1, 2, and 3 and mucin 1) was significantly increased in the treatment group (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01)...The tissue staining analysis showed that the cecal mucosa of broilers was significantly ameliorated after the addition of C. butyricum (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). These results showed that dietary supplementation with C. butyricum can enhance the antioxidant capacity, mucosal barrier function, and stabilize the cecal microbiota, resulting in improving the growth performance."

Dietary 25-hydroxyvitamin D improves intestinal health and microbiota of laying hens under high stocking density.
(PubMed, Poult Sci)
- "Compared with the layers with LD, the layers with HD had lower crypt depth in duodenum (P < 0.05), lower short chain fatty acid (propionic and butyric acid) contents in cecum (P < 0.05), and lower mRNA expression of intestinal barrier associated protein (claudin-1, mucin-1 and mucin-2)...In HD layers, 25-OH-D administration decreased the enrichment of Bacteroidetes (phylum), increased Firmicutes (phylum), and Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio (P < 0.05). These results suggest that supplementing 25-OH-D in diets may elevate gut health through the improvement of intestinal barrier function, antioxidant capacity and cecal microbiota composition in laying hens with high stocking density."

Short Administration of Combined Prebiotics Improved Microbial Colonization, Gut Barrier, and Growth Performance of Neonatal Piglets.
(PubMed, ACS Omega)
- "Additionally, GMF administration increased luminal acetate and propionate levels, upregulated the gene expressions of intestinal tight junctions (Occludin, Claudins, and ZO-1), mucins (Mucin-1, Mucin-2, Mucin-4, and Mucin-20), and cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-22) while decreased the plasma diamine oxidase (DAO) level on day 21...In conclusion, the first week administration of GMF facilitated the colonization of beneficial bacteria, promoted intestinal development by enhancing microbiota-associated intestinal barrier functions, and improved the growth performance of the piglets during the whole neonatal period. Our findings provide guidelines for combined prebiotics application in modulating the microbial colonization and intestinal development of the neonates."
