Radiation and Busulfan-Free Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Using Briquilimab (JSP191) Anti-CD117 Antibody-Conditioning, Transient Immunosuppression and TCRαβ+ T-Cell/CD19+ B-Cell Depleted Haploidentical Grafts in Patients with Fanconi Anemia
(ASH 2023)
- "Objective: To reduce acute and long-term treatment-related toxicities, we have developed a first of its kind treatment intended to improve the safety of allo-HSCT through: 1) a TBI- and busulfan-free conditioning regimen consisting of briquilimab, rabbit ATG (rATG - Thymoglobulin), fludarabine, cyclophosphamide and rituximab - briquilimab (formerly called JSP191) is a monoclonal antibody (mAb) that targets human CD117 to deplete host HSCs enabling blood and immune reconstitution with minimal toxicity with the other agents being used for transient immune suppression to prevent immunologic rejection; 2) transplantation of TCRαβ+ T-cell/CD19+ B-cell hematopoietic grafts - a stem cell therapy that enhances donor hematopoietic and immune reconstitution while decreasing GvHD; and 3) a pre- and post-transplant monitoring protocol to maximize engraftment. All three patients in the Phase 1b portion of the study show early safety and efficacy of this approach. Briquilimab was..."

The Impact of an Adaptive mHealth Intervention on Improving Patient-Provider Health Care Communication: Secondary Analysis of the DIAMANTE Trial.
(PubMed, JMIR Mhealth Uhealth)
- "While our study found no significant changes in patient-provider communication by RCT arm, the temporal implications of the COVID-19 pandemic during the DIAMANTE study period remain unclear and should be further studied. This study is the first of its kind to examine the influence of an adaptive mHealth intervention on patient-reported health care communication, with insights that may be important as digitally-enabled chronic care management rapidly expands."

Identification of novel electrophysiologic biomarkers of cognition in glioma-infiltrated cortex.
(ASCO 2025)
- "This study is the first of its kind to identify unique electrophysiological biomarker differences (at resting state) for oligodendroglioma and astrocytoma speech cortex. It has two key implications. First, clinically, the identification of electrophysiologic biomarkers may improve direct cortical stimulation (DCS) mapping: It can make surgeries faster by identifying cortex critical for cognition (speech) based on these biomarkers, safer by helping neurosurgeons avoid resecting critical regions, and more accessible."

Prophylactic Nimodipine for Hearing Preservation in Vestibular Schwannoma: A Retrospective Cohort Study
(ARO 2025)
- "This study, the largest of its kind to date, provides compelling evidence for the efficacy of prophylactic nimodipine in preserving hearing in patients undergoing vestibular schwannoma surgery. While our results highlight nimodipine's potential clinical benefits, the retrospective design limits the ability to assess long-term hearing outcomes. Future prospective studies are necessary to confirm these findings and further elucidate nimodipine's role in otologic surgery."

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Rates Among U.S. Military Veteran Females and Males and Non-Veterans in the National Health Interview Survey.
(PubMed, Mil Med)
- "Veterans of both sexes are more likely to be vaccinated than their non-Veteran civilian counterparts. However, vaccination rates overall remain low. To our knowledge, ours is the first study of its kind to establish HPV vaccination rates among female Veterans. These findings underscore the important role of DoD and VA health care systems in improving HPV vaccine uptake and mitigating HPV-associated cancer risk among Veterans."

A novel autism-associated KCNB1 mutation dramatically slows Kv2.1 potassium channel activation, deactivation and inactivation.
(PubMed, Front Cell Neurosci)
- "To our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind that compares the presentation of siblings each with a KCNB1 disorder. Our study demonstrates that Kv2.1-S114R has profound cellular and phenotypic consequences. Understanding the mechanisms underlying KCNB1-linked disorders aids clinicians in diagnosis and treatment and provides potential therapeutic avenues to pursue."

Identification of gaps in the delivery of high-quality care of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis.
(PubMed, Dis Esophagus)
- "This is the first study of its kind to utilize these previously established QIs to objectively identify care gaps that exist in EoE amongst several institutions. These findings also highlight the importance of QIs and standardization of management of complex chronic diseases like EoE to help bridge these gaps and provide a framework to measure adherence to these best practices."

(PubMed, Explor Res Clin Soc Pharm)
- "To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind to discuss the implementation of Compass Rose™...Compass Rose™ implementation had no significant impact on staff satisfaction, patient satisfaction, or overall refill documentation time. Prescription turnaround time increased, which could be due to significant workflow changes with Compass Rose™ or several other contributing factors such as increased prescription volume and training new staff during this period.Benefits of Compass Rose™ included standardization of workflow, ability to quantify staff performance and clinical impact, and increased transparency regarding care provided by the specialty pharmacy team."

"Resilience?" perspectives from adults living with sickle cell disease.
(PubMed, J Natl Med Assoc)
- "This study suggests that current definitions of resilience used in validated survey measures do not match how adults living with SCD define resilience. Our results expand the understanding of resilience as a dynamic process, more about the process of "not giving up." These findings suggest that providers may find it productive to facilitate conversations with adults living with SCD around "how" they approach challenges. This study is also the first of its kind to examine resilience in a community living with SCD."

Costs of HIV prevention services provided by community-based organizations to female sex workers in Nigeria.
(PubMed, PLoS One)
- "Estimates for HCT services are relatively similar to previous studies. There is substantial variation in unit costs across facilities, and evidence of a negative relationship between unit costs and scale for all services. This is one of the few studies to measure HIV prevention service delivery costs to female sex workers through CBOs. Furthermore, this study also looked at the relationship between costs and management practices-the first of its kind to do so in Nigeria. Results can be leveraged to strategically plan for future service delivery across similar settings."
