Perioperative management of a patient with Kennedy disease undergoing knee replacement: A case report
(PubMed, Beijing Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban)
- "After sufficient preoperative consultation and evaluation, femoral nerve block was performed with 0.25% ropivacaine under guidance with ultrasound and nerve stimulator, followed by induction of general anesthesia with sufentanil, propofol, and etomidate...During the operation, propofol and remifentanil were used for total intravenous anesthesia...A postoperative analgesia combination of nerve block and oral nonsteroidal analgesics was performed, and emergency pain rescue with pethidine was administered if necessary. The analgesic effect was satisfactory. The patient was safely discharged in the end and recovered well."

Double-blind randomized noninferiority study of the effect of pharyngeal lidocaine anesthesia on EUS.
(PubMed, Endosc Ultrasound)
- "Secondary outcomes included endoscopist and patient satisfaction, midazolam/pethidine doses, number of gag events, number of esophageal insertion attempts, use of sedative/analgesic antagonists, interruptions due to body movements, throat symptoms after endoscopy, and sedation-related adverse events...These results suggest that pharyngeal anesthesia with lidocaine can be omitted when performing EUS under sedation with concomitant analgesics. Omitting pharyngeal anesthesia with lidocaine may prevent discomfort and complications caused by pharyngeal anesthesia, shorten examination times, and reduce medical costs."

Safety and Efficacy of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors in Patients Who Use Psychoactive Substances: Potential Drug Interactions and Substance Use Disorder Treatment Data.
(PubMed, CNS Drugs)
- "Suspected cases of serotonin toxicity have been reported for MAOIs in combination with amphetamine, dextromethorphan, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), meperidine (pethidine), methadone, and tramadol...Fatalities have been reported for MAOIs in combination with 5-MeO-DMT, amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, dextromethorphan (in overdose), MDMA, methamphetamine, meperidine, and tramadol (in overdose)...While there was initially hope MAOIs might effectively treat some SUDs, there are no robust human data to support their efficacy in this context. Given growing levels of substance use and an increasing number of novel illicit compounds being produced, more research on MAOI safety in patients with psychiatric conditions and comorbid psychoactive substance use/misuse is essential to determining their appropriateness in this complex patient population."

Prophylactic Role of Ketamine and Dexmedetomidine on the Prevention of Shivering in Patients Undergoing Inguinal Herniorrhaphy by Spinal Anesthesia: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
(PubMed, Anesth Pain Med)
- "Due to the potential complications associated with the use of pethidine, such as respiratory failure, the exploration of alternative drugs for the prevention and treatment of postoperative shivering has been a key consideration. Throughout all time periods, patients in the dexmedetomidine group exhibited significantly lower heart rates. Both ketamine and dexmedetomidine proved effective in reducing post-herniorrhaphy shivering compared to the control group, with the effect being notably greater in the dexmedetomidine group."

Evaluating the role of preemptive intravenous ketorolac in preventing post-operative pain in patients undergoing hemorrhoidectomy: A randomized clinical trial.
(PubMed, Surgeon)
- "We found that NSAIDs, particularly ketorolac, can be used as preemptive medication to reduce postoperative pain and decrease the use of opioids. This might lead to a decrease in the side effects of opioids. However, further evaluations with larger populations and longer follow-up periods are essential. This randomized clinical trial registration code is IRCT20240808062692N1."

Comparative efficacy and safety of dexmedetomidine and midazolam for conscious sedation in blind nasotracheal intubation: a randomized controlled trial.
(PubMed, Front Med (Lausanne))
- "Sixty patients undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgery were randomly divided into the dexmedetomidine (DEX) group (1.0 μg/kg, 15 min of infusion + pethidine 1.0 mg/kg) and the midazolam (MID) group (0.02 mg/kg + pethidine 1.0 mg/kg)...The intraoperative fentanyl dosage, end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure (PETCO2) were recorded, and postoperative numerical rating scale (NRS) score, satisfaction and adverse reaction incidence were evaluated...The dosage of sufentanil, the postoperative NRS score, and adverse reactions (nausea, vomiting, respiratory depression) were reduced in the DEX group (p 0.05). Dexmedetomidine used for blind nasotracheal intubation for oral and maxillofacial surgery can provide comprehensive anesthesia effects, significantly reduce the stress response of tracheal intubation and the dosage of intraoperative opioids, while maintaining good hemodynamic stability."

Novel Approach: Radial Ebus Guided Bronchoscopic Transparenchymal Nodule Access
(APSR 2025)
- "Bronchoscopy was performed with IM pethidine 50 mg and lignocaine 1% for topical anaesthesia. Discussion : Peripheral pulmonary nodules < 2 cm in size without visible CT bronchus sign are known to be difficult to biopsy. For hospitals where technologies such as virtual bronchoscopy, electromagnetic navigation or robotic bronchoscopy are not available, bronchial branch tracing, radial ultrasound and fluoroscopy can be used to perform bronchoscopic transparenchymal nodule access."

OPIOID AVAILABILITY FOR PAIN IN PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY POPULATIONS IN LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME COUNTRIES: A PAUCITY OF RESEARCH
(SIOP 2025)
- "The most frequently reported opioids were morphine and fentanyl, in 11 and 10 articles respectively, followed by tramadol (4), pethidine, methadone, and codeine (2 each), and tapentadol, remifentanil, alfentanil, and oxycodone (one each). Our finding of limited opioid research in pediatric oncology in LMICs highlights a significant research gap and possibly limited access to opioids for pain in LMICs in pediatric oncology. In the context in which opioid distribution is unequal and inequitable generally, this is especially concerning for the vulnerable pediatric oncology population."

Comparative Effectiveness of Continuous Intra-Operative Suprascapular Nerve Block (CI-SSNB) with and Without Intravenous Patient-Controlled Analgesia (IV-PCA) on Acute Post-Arthroscopy Pain: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
(PubMed, J Clin Med)
- "This retrospective cohort study aimed to compare the analgesic efficacy and safety of continuous intra-operative suprascapular nerve block (CI-SSNB) alone versus CI-SSNB combined with fentanyl-based IV-PCA (CI-SSNB + IV-PCA)...The total number of rescue pethidine doses up to post-operative day 3 was 1.80 ± 2.02 vs. 0.95 ± 1.10, respectively (p = 0.108). However, adverse effects such as nausea and vomiting occurred only in the CI-SSNB + IV-PCA group. CI-SSNB provides comparable analgesia to CI-SSNB + IV-PCA, while avoiding IV-PCA-related side effects, suggesting that IV-PCA may not be necessary when CI-SSNB is employed for post-operative analgesia following ARCR."
