PERSONALISED PHARMACOTHERAPY REGIMEN: EMPOWERING A PATIENT AND FAMILY WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES
(ESPN 2025)
- "Visual aids e.g picture information leaflets • The MDT (pharmacists, dietitian, LD team, social worker, psychologist, nurses and doctors) developed materials and training to empower Medication • Pill School for the patient to learn to swallow tablets with fluids e.g movicol, which were not included in her fluid restriction • Reducing home medication burden... Our intervention improves health literacy, medication and diet adherence, improves patient experience and leads to earlier discharge. This approach supports patients and families, even those with LD, enhances health outcomes, reduces bed occupancy and costs. Work is needed to ensure developmentally appropriate care is available to empower patients and families."

An unusual genotypic case of very early onset inflammatory bowel disease
(BSPGHAN 2023)
- "She was treated for 6 months with Movicol and sodium picosulfate with partial resolution...She was started on infliximab infusions, azathioprine, and topical tacrolimus (for rectal lesions)...She is currently on 4 weekly vedolizumab treatment, with steroids, following poor response to high dose infliximab and is being considered for colostomy and colectomy if current treatment fails...As highlighted above, our patient is currently on vedolizumab therapy, some authors suggest ‘considering anakinra, an IL-1 receptor antagonist, in patients with IL-10 signalling defects who are too ill to undergo transplant or while searching for a suitable donor, as this has led to marked clinical, endoscopic, and histologic improvement in some patients’.(Schwartz et al, 2022)4 It remains to be seen if our patient would respond to a particular type of treatment, in preference over another...In conclusion, this case highlights a rare direct IL-27 association with VEOIBD. We hope that this..."

The impact of using a multistrain probiotic supplement on gastrointestinal function in children and adolescents with severe recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa.
(PubMed, Clin Exp Dermatol)
- "We have shown in this case series that giving a multistrain probiotic supplement in patients with RDEB-S has the potential to improve stool consistency and reduce or prevent the need for chronic macrogol gel use. Future larger-scale, placebo-controlled trials are needed to confirm these results."

Resolution of severe constipation following a switch from calcium carbonate to recombinant human PTH therapy: A case report
(ESPE 2022)
- "She developed constipation at 4-years-old when she was commenced on Movicol...Unfortunately, the patient developed soiling and management was escalated to Picolax and then Botox and manual extraction...She was admitted at 12 years of age for rhPTH (Terrosa) therapy subcutaneously...Recombinant human PTH therapy can be used successfully to wean calcium supplements and reduce severe complications secondary to the oral medication. It also improves compliance and overall bone biochemistry."

THE EFFECT OF A SINGLE DOSE 2 MG PRUCALOPRIDE ON THE COMPLETION RATE OF COLON CAPSULE ENDOSCOPIES IN COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING
(DDW 2022)
- "Methods : In a randomized clinical trial, participants have undergone CCE using a bowel preparation regimen consisting of Movicol and two doses of MoviPrep consumed prior to capsule ingestion followed by three boosters of Eziclen (control group). The higher PDR may therefore be attributed to the increased completion rate and thereby better visualization of the mucosa. A 2 mg single dose Prucalopride tablet 45-60 minutes prior to capsule ingestion is a simple and easy compliable way of increasing the completion rate of CCE in a CRC screening population."

Antibiotic Combination Therapy Improves Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease in Individuals With Chronic Constipation
(ACG 2021)
- "Here we explore the effects of a novel antibiotic combination therapy (ACT) comprising Metronidazole, Vancomycin and Rifaximin for the treatment of constipation, which improved symptoms of PD in two cases...Before commencing ACT, preliminary MDS-UPDRS was 38 and symptoms included asymmetric tremor, cogwheel rigidity, bradykinesia and shuffling gait despite treatment with Levodopa and Carbidopa. At 1yr review on ACT, constipation had abated with daily bowel motions not requiring Movicol...Before ACT with added Colchicine was commenced, baseline MDS-UPDRS was 37 and symptoms included asymmetric tremor, rigidity, postural instability and decreased arm swing despite treatment with Pramipexole and Rasagiline... ACT successfully treated constipation and improved neurological symptoms of PD in two cases. Our findings suggest that treatments modulating the gut microbiota may play a role in reducing the severity and progression of PD as well as ameliorating non-motor symptoms..."

We report this case to raise awareness of severe immediate hypersensitivity to these apparently innocuous ingredients and a novel source of exposure. A low index of suspicion, lack of standardized nomenclature and commercial reagents for testing are current barriers to diagnosis."

Utilisation and Safety of Polyethylene Glycol 3350 with Electrolytes in Children Under 2 Years: A Retrospective Cohort.
(PubMed, J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr)
- "The safety aspect of this study did not identify any signals of concern in the constipation cohort. The number of patients in the FI cohort were too small for robust conclusions. If information were available, then a safety study would ideally assess treatment intake per kg, including electrolyte intake, before reaching safety conclusions. Nevertheless, these data contribute to real-world evidence on use of PEG 3350+E in this population."
