Assessment of the radiological health hazards around mine sites in Jos Area, Nigeria.
(PubMed, Environ Geochem Health)
- "The activity concentration of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th in 24 mine wastes and 36 soil samples collected from farmlands adjoining the selected mine sites were determined by using a gamma-ray spectrometer fully equipped with an MPC 2000 radiation counter...The different hazard indices show a potential source of high radiological exposure. The findings indicate serious radiological health and environmental risks, requiring strict policy interventions, safer mining practices, remediation plans, and restrictions on the utilization of these mine wastes in construction and farming."

Racial, Ethnic and Geographic Disparities in Digestive Diseases Mortality in the United States, 2000-2019.
(PubMed, Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol)
- "Despite an overall decrease in digestive diseases mortality, significant disparities persist across racial and ethnic groups. AIAN and White individuals experienced increased mortality rates, particularly among females. Targeted interventions and further research are needed to address these disparities and improve digestive health equity."

Trends in avascular necrosis and related arthroplasties in hospitalized patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.
(PubMed, Semin Arthritis Rheum)
- "We report a breakpoint in rising SLE-AVN after 2011, which may relate to newer steroid-sparing therapies (i.e., belimumab). AVN-associated arthroplasties decreased in SLE and RA. Fewer AVN-associated arthroplasties were noted for Black patients and those with Medicaid, indicating potential disparities. Further research should examine treatment differences impacting AVN and arthroplasty rates."

Deguelin and Paclitaxel Loaded PEG-PCL Nano-Micelles for Suppressing the Proliferation and Inducing Apoptosis of Breast Cancer Cells.
(PubMed, Front Biosci (Landmark Ed))
- "This study proposes that nano-micelles formed by PEG-PCL can enhance the cytotoxicity of Paclitaxel against breast cancer cells, and concurrently, the loading of Deguelin may further inhibit cell proliferation. This presents a potential for the development of a novel therapeutic strategy."

Trends, Sociodemographic and Clinical Factors Associated with Avascular Necrosis and Related Arthroplasties in Hospitalized Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Rheumatoid Arthritis
(ACR Convergence 2023)
- "In contrast, there was an initial increase followed by a tendency to decline in SLE-AVN (APC 2000-2011: 1.96* APC 2011-2019 -2.05), with a decrease in the proportion of arthroplasties over time (APC -2.03*, Figure 2 ). We report an initial increasing trend of SLE-AVN followed by a tendency to decline, which may relate to newer steroid-sparing therapies (i.e., Belimumab approval in 2011). There was an overall declining trend of AVN-associated arthroplasties in both SLE and RA. AVN hospitalizations were more likely to be younger and of the Black race."

RECENT AND PROJECTED TRENDS IN ANAL CANCER INCIDENCE AMONG PERSONS WITH HIV IN THE US
(CROI 2023)
- "Absolute incidence and calendar trends varied by US region, ranging from 27.2/100,000 in the Northeast (APC2000-2010=7.9% [CI, -0.3 to 16.7], APC2010-2016=-21.5% [CI, -35.0 to -5.2]), 58.5/100,000 in the South (APC2000-2016=-2.5% [CI, -6.0 to 1.0]), 74.3/100,000 in the West (APC2000-2016=-4.1% [CI, -6.4 to -1.7]), to 97.1/100,000 in the Midwest (APC2000-2016=-2.2% [CI, -7.3 to 3.3]). In the US (particularly, in the Northeast and West), anal cancer incidence among PWH is decreasing, while the absolute incidence and relative risk was highest in the Midwest. Geographic variation in incidence and temporal trends may reflect regional differences in the HIV epidemic and care dynamics and anal cancer screening practices."

Imaging the In Vivo Degradation of Tissue Engineering Implants by Use of Supramolecular Radiopaque Biomaterials.
(PubMed, Macromol Biosci)
- "For this purpose, a biodegradable radiopaque biomaterial is presented, modularly composed of a bisurea chain-extended polycaprolactone (PCL2000-U4U) elastomer and a novel iodinated bisurea-modified CA additive (I-U4U)...(Immuno)histochemistry shows comparable cellular contents and a similar neo-tissue formation process for test and control group, demonstrating that the CA does not have apparent adverse effects. A supramolecular approach to create solid radiopaque biomaterials can therefore be used to noninvasively monitor the biodegradation of synthetic implants."

Mechanically robust enzymatically degradable shape memory polyurethane urea with a rapid recovery response induced by NIR.
(PubMed, J Mater Chem B)
- "By increasing the molecular weight of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and hard segment content, a PCL4000-based SMPU with a modulus value of 115 MPa was obtained, which is three times that of a PCL2000-based sample...Gold nanorods were further incorporated into the PU matrix, endowing the materials with a fast near-infrared (NIR) response in 23 s for shape recovery (NIR wavelength of 808 nm, 1.5 W). Combined with enzymatic degradability, these PU/gold-nanorod composites exhibit great potential to be used in biodegradable shape memory expanding stents."
