Antibiotics Alter Duodenal Immune Populations Upon Gluten Exposure in Mice: Implications for Non-Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity.
(PubMed, Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol)
- "BALB/C mice consuming gluten-free chow received amoxicillin/clavulanate (5mg/kg) or PBS-vehicle daily for 5-days...This study demonstrated that modulating the microbiome with antibiotics was sufficient to alter the immune response to gluten in mice, suggesting that the microbiome may determine the capacity for gluten to induce immune responses. These findings contribute valuable insights into possible microbial mechanisms underlying NCGS, such as altered gluten metabolism or production of immunomodulatory metabolites."

Otitis media caused by Vibrio cholerae in a child: a case report and literature review.
(PubMed, Infez Med)
- "Treatment with amoxicillin/clavulanate was complemented with ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone otic drops and led to a complete recovery without sequelae...In a context where vibriosis is increasingly common, our case exemplifies the importance of considering Vibrio spp. among the possible causative agents of otitis, especially in coastal areas or when exposure to potentially contaminated water cannot be ruled out, even in the absence of predisposing conditions."

- "The bacterial isolates were resistant to Levofloxacin, Penicillin G, Ceftazidime, and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (AMC). These results position PEONE as a promising, plant-based alternative for combating antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infections. Further in vivo studies are warranted to explore its clinical applicability and safety profile."

Repurposing Povidone-Iodine for the Treatment of Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media in Nigerian Children.
(PubMed, Otol Neurotol)
- "This study shows that 0.5% povidone-iodine aural irrigation is at least as effective as 0.3% ciprofloxacin otic suspension in treating uncomplicated CSOM. In addition, any benefit from the use of oral antibiotics in treating uncomplicated CSOM appears to be negligible."

Penicillin remains an effective agent against Group A Streptococcus in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis of antibiotic resistance and associated genes.
(PubMed, S Afr Med J)
- "This review comprehensively characterises the latest evidence on the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in Strep A in LMICs. Strep A in LMICs continues to be highly susceptible to antibiotics in vitro, primarily to penicillins. Strep A macrolide resistance patterns in LMICs are similar to those observed in high-income countries. The findings of this review may serve to inform effective treatment decisions and public health interventions."

Intravenous antibiotic use in a private mining hospital in North West Province, South Africa.
(PubMed, S Afr Med J)
- "There is a need to monitor IV antibiotic use and encourage IV antibiotic de-escalation to limit the rampant use of broad- spectrum antibiotics and manage the most prevalent infections effectively in the shortest possible time, consequently reducing the average duration of hospitalisation. IV antibiotic treatment review is therefore pivotal to optimise antibiotic therapy, the transition of IV to oral antibiotics, and discontinuation of IV antibiotics when they are no longer necessary."

Bacteraemia with Hepatic Abscess Due to Actinomyces Odontolyticus Associated with Gastrointestinal Foreign Body.
(PubMed, Eur J Case Rep Intern Med)
- "Always consider gastrointestinal foreign bodies: In elderly patients with dementia presenting with liver abscesses that do not respond to conventional treatment, foreign body perforation should be suspected and actively investigated using a contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan.Actinomyces spp. should be considered: In cases of liver abscess of unknown aetiology, Actinomyces spp. should be considered - a slow-growing anaerobic bacterium requiring matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization matrix-assisted laser desorption/Ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry for accurate species identification and targeted antibiotic therapy guidance.Combined treatment is the key to success: Optimal management requires a combination of three elements - surgical removal of the foreign body, thorough abscess drainage, and prolonged beta-lactam antibiotics to prevent recurrence."

Trends and factors associated with pneumonia mortality at Buea Regional Hospital in Cameroon from 2020 to 2023.
(PubMed, PLoS One)
- "Although the number of pneumonia cases fluctuated over time, they remained consistently present across all months from 2020 to 2023, highlighting the year-round nature of pneumonia transmission and its endemicity in the Buea Health District. Being hospitalized for less than 10 days and not using amoxicillin-clavulanic acid for treatment were risk factors of pneumonia mortality. These findings underscore the importance of timely diagnosis and empiric treatment with guideline recommended agents such as amoxicillin-clavulanic acid so as to reduce pneumonia mortality in the Buea regional hospital."

Commensal Clostridia in the preterm gut as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance: susceptibility profiles, and resistance genes.
(PubMed, FEMS Microbiol Ecol)
- "While most isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, imipenem, and metronidazole, resistance to tetracycline (12%), clindamycin (35%), and cefotaxime (35%) was observed. Distinct species-specific resistance included linezolid (Clostridium argentinense), chloramphenicol (Clostridium innocuum), and tigecycline (Paeniclostridium sordellii), and a one Robinsonella peoriensis isolate displayed vancomycin resistance. The detection of tet and erm genes corresponded with phenotypic resistance, while β-lactamase activity was uncommon. Although colonizing at low levels, these findings highlight the ecological significance of rarely studied commensal Clostridia and their contribution to the neonatal resistome, acting as underappreciated reservoirs of AMR genes during a critical window of microbiome assembly."

Prevalence, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Risk Factors of Enteric Bacterial Infections Among Children Under Five in Nairobi County, Kenya.
(PubMed, Int J Microbiol)
- "High resistance to ampicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid was common, exceeding 70% in key pathogens like E. coli and E. cloacae. In contrast, meropenem, amikacin, gentamicin, and ciprofloxacin retained near-complete efficacy...Urgent integrated interventions are needed, including strengthening WASH infrastructure, promoting rational antibiotic use, and enhancing AMR surveillance. These findings provide a critical baseline for public health action and underscore the need to safeguard last-line antibiotics."
