Intravenous non-medical mephentermine use among young men: A consecutive case series from a tertiary addiction treatment facility in India.
(PubMed, Asian J Psychiatr)
- "This series highlights an emerging pattern of intravenous mephentermine misuse among young men in performance-oriented contexts. Given the associated psychosis and cardiovascular risks, clinicians should routinely screen for stimulant use. Community awareness campaigns and stricter regulation of over-the-counter stimulants are crucial for harm reduction."

INFLUENCE OF COMORBIDITIES ON COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING PARTICIPATION AND MORTALITY
(DDW 2025)
- "Significant comorbidity was defined as having at least one of the following: albumin10,000 copies or CD44 mg/dL, platelets4 µmol/L, NH3>20, positive urine amphetamine or cocaine, serum ethanol>80, hemoglobin A1C>10%, and stage 3 or 4 cancer...These patients also had higher all-cause mortality. Tailoring programmatic population outreach to account for significant comorbidities should improve the delivery of organized screening services."

Plasticity of ventral tegmental area disturbance during abstinence after repeated amphetamine exposure: restoration by selective activation of group II metabotropic glutamate receptors.
(PubMed, Front Pharmacol)
- "The involvement VTA afferent regions with respect to AMPH actions was analyzed either by local instillation of drugs or through inactivation by tetrodotoxin. AMPH re-exposure after abstinence turned VTA activity down, but this suppression involved alternative circuits and could no longer be rescued by mGluR activation. Thus, abstinence from repeated AMPH intake drives VTA activity from hypo-into hyperdopaminergic states, and both can be readjusted towards physiological levels via different members of group II mGluRs."

Successful treatment of pulmonary hypertension due to HIV infection and amphetamine snorting: a case report.
(PubMed, Front Med (Lausanne))
- "In this study, we report a case of pulmonary hypertension with several concomitant risk factors who experienced a complete clinical improvement after drug rehabilitation, application of anti-retroviral therapy (ART), and sildenafil. Our case intends to raise awareness that PH should be suspected among HIV-positive patients with unexplained dyspnea. It is notable that investigating the coexistent risk factors and a multidisciplinary team are crucial for early diagnosis and better prognosis of HIV-related PH."

Initial exposure to addictive drugs activates polysialylated NCAM-mediated hippocampal memory-associated synaptic plasticity in the rat prior to the emergence of dependence behaviour.
(PubMed, Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry)
- "Using a rodent model, we assessed hippocampal NCAM PSA expression and synaptic remodelling in response to acute and repeated administration of heroin, cocaine, and amphetamine...These results identify hippocampal memory machinery as a key early target of addictive drugs and suggest that drug-associated memories may co-opt normal learning processes, contributing to the persistent and intrusive nature of drug cravings. The study provides novel insights into the mechanisms by which early drug experiences shape enduring behavioural vulnerability to addiction."

Reduced Sensitivity to Negative Feedback May Lead to Risky Decision-Making in Amphetamine Users.
(PubMed, Addict Biol)
- "Amphetamine users were less sensitive to punitive or aversive stimuli. This reduced sensitivity might lead to a higher tendency for risky decision-making, with them less able to learn from mistakes and thus repeatedly engage in risky behaviours."

Exploring landscape of drug abuse trends in Pakistan: A decade and a half of clinical laboratory big data analysis.
(PubMed, PLOS Glob Public Health)
- "The panel includes screening of common drugs, amphetamine (AMP), benzodiazepine (BZO), barbiturates (BAR), cannabinoids (THC), cocaine (COC), and opioids (OPI) as well as blood alcohol (ALC) levels...Yearly trend analysis shows an increasing number of THC tests requested over time, with THC exhibiting the highest positivity rate, followed by BZO, OPI, and ALC.The 15-year patterns depict the rising prevalence of drug consumption which is subsequently increasing the demand for drug screening tests. The study highlights Pakistan's growing drug prevalence and calls for targeted policies to address its use, including strengthened prevention programs, improved regulation and better management and rehabilitation access."

Use of antidotes in cases of poisoning from drugs of abuse treated in Spanish emergency departments.
(PubMed, Emergencias)
- "Antidotes, usually naloxone and flumazenil, were used to treat a high percentage of patients poisoned by drugs of abuse who are attended by Spanish EDs belonging to the REDUrHE. In a third of these cases, both antidotes were used. Use was associated with diminished consciousness. Use of the antidote, especially flumazenil, was inappropriate in most of the episodes."

Amphetamine Induced Group I Pulmonary Hypertension: A Case Report of Unforseen Consequences
(ATS 2025)
- "This abstract is funded by: None Introduction: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a medical condition in which there is hypertension in the lungs. In patients classified as intermediate-high risk based on their REVEAL score, PAH therapy should be initiated with endothelin receptor antagonist (bosentan), phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (sildenafil), soluble guanylate cyclase stimulator (riociguat), prostanoid (epoprostenol), and/or prostacyclin agents (selexipag, and treprostinil). Treatment of PAH can be challenging as hemodynamics can be compromised with induction of these vasodilative agents; however, is necessary to prevent disease progression."

Low to moderate doses of 3-methylmethcathinone (3-MMC) produce analgesic effects in healthy volunteers: a proof of principle study with a designer drug.
(PubMed, Psychopharmacology (Berl))
- "At present, there are no medical applications for synthetic cathinones, but in the past cathinone and other compounds that are structurally related to amphetamine have been evaluated and recognized for their intrinsic analgesic quality...It is concluded that 3-MMC produces prolonged analgesic effects at doses that appear low enough to avoid a challenging subjective experience and that have been associated with a benign side effect profile. The present data warrant further research into the analgesic effects of low to moderate doses of 3-MMC in patient populations."

Rapid Assessment of Samples from Large-Scale Clandestine Synthetic Drug Laboratories by Soft Ionization by Chemical Reaction in Transfer-High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry.
(PubMed, J Am Soc Mass Spectrom)
- "The aim of this work is to evaluate the suitability of the SICRIT (soft ionization by chemical reaction in transfer) ion source, which is based on the dielectric barrier discharge ionization principle, combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), for the rapid classification of liquid samples from amphetamine production in a seized large-scale clandestine drug laboratory...In addition, supervised machine learning algorithms were evaluated to obtain a classification model for the assessment of production waste samples from one dismantled synthetic drug laboratory, and a random forest classifier showed the best performance with an accuracy of 97%. The potential of the novel SICRIT-HRMS approach for the assessment of synthetic drug laboratories was demonstrated."

Current drug use patterns and HIV and HCV prevalence among people who inject drugs in suburban areas of Malaysia.
(PubMed, J Int AIDS Soc)
- "This study observed low HIV prevalence among PWID, primarily associated with ATS use, while HCV prevalence, linked to heroin use, remained high. Higher odds of being HCV positive among PWID who reported to have ever but not currently enrolled in methadone programmes indicate that treatment may not be continuous once initiated, potentially due to exposure to the criminal justice system. These findings underscore the need for a dual approach: enhanced harm reduction programmes for PWID and a legal reform to address potential barriers posed by criminalization."

Non-endemic Skeletal Fluorosis as a Result of Inhalant Abuse
(ENDO 2025)
- "History was taken by another provider a couple of years later and after further questioning the patient admitted to being addicted to amphetamine and inhaling dust cleaner almost 2-3 cans a day for 4 years, last used in 2019... History taking is a fundamental element in medicine, as always. Although there is no specific therapy for skeletal fluorosis except removing the offending agent, calcium and vitamin D deficiency seems to worsen the condition. Efforts to understand the worsening of his Z-scores include repeating fluoride as well as NTX levels to observe a trend, and re-history taking to make sure nothing else is missed."
