Contact allergy to corticosteroids in Singapore: A single-center retrospective study of patch test data from 2004 to 2021
(AAD 2025)
- "Seven patients had concomitant sensitization across different classes – four to betamethasone-17-valerate and budesonide, two to betamethasone-17-valerate and tixocortol-21-pivalate, and one to triamcinolone acetonide, hydrocortisone-17-butyrate, dexamethasone, clobetasol-17-proprionate, budesonide, betamethasone-17-valerate and alclometasone. In conclusion, corticosteroid contact allergy is uncommon, but clinical suspicion and patch testing are essential for diagnosis, and concomitant sensitization is possible."

Glucocorticoids rescue cell surface trafficking of R451C Neuroligin3 and enhance synapse formation.
(PubMed, Traffic)
- "A screening in HEK-293 cells overexpressing NLGN3 of 2662 compounds (FDA-approved small molecule drug library), led to the identification of several glucocorticoids such as alclometasone dipropionate, desonide, prednisolone sodium phosphate, and dexamethasone (DEX), with the ability to favor the exit of full-length R451C NLGN3 from the ER. The effect of DEX was validated on a novel model system represented by neural stem progenitor cells and differentiated neurons derived from the R451C NLGN3 knock-in mouse, expressing the endogenous protein. This work shows a potential rescue strategy for an autism-linked mutation affecting cell surface trafficking of a synaptic protein."

Corticosteroids: a complex case of friend and foe
(BAD 2023)
- "The first episode occurred in 2016 when the patient was treated for a chest infection with amoxicillin and 5-mg prednisolone...In August 2019, the patient had a dexamethasone injection to her back and subsequently developed a widespread erythematous pruritic rash...Allergic reactions to corticosteroids have been reported, with an estimated prevalence of 0.1–0.3%, with contact dermatitis to corticosteroids having a higher frequency (0.5–5%). Although not life-threatening, contact allergy to corticosteroids can have significant impacts on quality of life and on treatment.Table 1Corticosteroid series patch testing results Hapten/compound_x000D_ . %_x000D_ . 48 h_x000D_ . 96 h_x000D_ . [VIRTUAL] Out with the old and in with the new? Getting the British Society for Cutaneous Allergy corticosteroid series up to scratch
(BAD 2020)
- "Six of eight allergens in the BSCA series had a positive result rate of at least 0.1%, with the exception of prednisolone (0%) and alclometasone dipropionate (0.03%)...They further recommended an extended series to include five newly available allergens with a view to re-audit in 1 year, so as to rationalize this further. This audit demonstrates the importance of regular assessment of recommended series, to ensure that they reflect clinical practice, to consider newly available allergens and have the best possible detection rate, while being pragmatic about not over-testing. This update will allow an increased yield of relevant corticosteroid allergy in our patients, and provide a basis for further audit, rationalization and service improvement."
