Burden of CMV in Patients With Sickle Cell Disease who Underwent Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (ASPHO 2026) - May 2, 2026 - "The primary outcome was cumulative incidence (CI) of CMV DNAemia, defined the date of the first positive CMV PCR in the blood after start of serotherapy (alemtuzumab or ATG) and calculated overall and by donor (D) and recipient (R) serostatus...Only 23% of patients received prophylaxis using valacyclovir (n = 27), foscarnet (n = 7), valgancyclovir (n = 4), and letermovir (n = 3)... CMV infection is common (>60%) in seropositive patients with SCD who undergo HCT and high (24%) in D+/R-patients. There was a wide risk window for first detectable CMV. Despite high rates of infection, CMV disease and death from CMV is rare."
